Description

The Rectangular Alabaster Wall Light is a block of natural stone lit from within — a plain rectangle by day, a panel of warm, veined light after dark. The glow comes through the stone rather than off it, so the whole face lights evenly with no bright spot and nothing to look away from.

Four polished plates meet at square edges, with no rim, lens or visible fixing. Under four inches deep, so it sits in a hallway without projecting into it. The integrated LED runs warm — no bulb to buy, and no cool-white bulb to turn the stone grey.

Two heights on the same narrow footprint: 11.8″ for a vanity, hallway or tight strip of wall beside a bed; 17.7″ where it should read as a column of light — an entry, a stair wall, either side of a fireplace.

Natural Alabaster

Naturally Unique Veining

No two blocks of stone are ever the same

Alabaster is quarried, not manufactured. The seams in a block were set down long before anyone cut it, so the piece you receive will differ from the photographs on this page — and on a pair, the two blocks will differ from each other.

Six workshop views show alabaster cut and finished, each piece carrying different veining.

An inherent characteristic of real stone — not a quality defect.

Any of these we can work toward, if you tell us with the order. A specific pattern from a photograph we cannot. We can also photograph the actual stone before it ships.

Better Together

Buying a Pair?

Sconces almost always go up in twos

Select the variant marked (×2)a set costs less than two singles, and both blocks are cut from stone selected together, so the tone stays in the same family.

Order the second one months later and the two will not agree — every block comes from a different seam of stone.

Why This One

A Rectangle With Nowhere to Hide

01

Light Through the Stone, Not Out of an Opening

The source sits behind the block, so the light has to travel through the alabaster to reach the room. The whole face lights evenly, the veining shows from within, and there is no bright spot and nothing pointing at you — which is why it can hang at eye level beside a mirror.

02

No Rim, No Lens, No Visible Fixing

Four polished plates meet at square edges and nothing else is added. There is no trim to date the piece and no hardware to notice, so it sits in a room as a block of stone rather than as a fitting — and the material has to carry it, because nothing else is there to.

03

Under Four Inches Off the Wall

At 3.9″ deep it clears a corridor, a stair run and the wall beside a door, where a projecting sconce gets caught by a shoulder or a suitcase. Both heights sit on the same narrow footprint, so the choice is about how much wall you fill, not how far it sticks out.

04

One Decision Already Made for You

The LED is integrated at 2700K warm white, so there is no bulb to buy, nothing to replace, and no chance of a cool-white bulb turning warm stone grey. On a fixture where the material is the whole design, that is the one mistake worth designing out.

Cut and polished from natural alabaster — veining differs from piece to piece

Caring for alabaster: dust with a dry, soft cloth only. The stone is porous, so water, glass cleaner, vinegar and alcohol leave marks that sit in the surface permanently rather than wiping away — and never spray anything at the fixture, since liquid runs down the block into the backplate. Switch the power off at the wall and let the fixture cool before cleaning. The LED is integrated, so dusting is the whole of the maintenance.

Find Your Fit

Same Footprint, Two Heights

Both sizes are 5.9″ wide and under 4″ deep. The only question is how much wall you want the light to fill.

Small

11.8″

the small size

Under a foot tall. The right choice beside a bathroom mirror, in a hallway, or on the narrow strip of wall between a nightstand and a window, where a taller block would feel wedged in.

17.7″

the large size

Nearly a foot and a half. Reads as a column of light rather than a fitting — for an entry, a stair wall, either side of a fireplace, or any tall bare wall that needs an anchor.

3.9″

depth off the wall

Shallow enough for a corridor, a stair run or the wall beside a door, where anything projecting further gets caught by a shoulder or a suitcase.

Scale & Proportion

Drawn to scale. Room and figure shown for reference only and are not included.

A line drawing gives the rectangular alabaster wall light as 5.9 inches wide, 3.9 inches deep, and 11.8 or 17.7 inches tall.
Which Size Take the 11.8″ beside a vanity mirror, in a hallway, or on a narrow wall beside a bed. Take the 17.7″ for an entry, a stair wall or a fireplace, where the block should carry the wall on its own. On a wall under 24″ wide, the small size is almost always the right call.
Mounting Height Centre the fixture at about 60″ off the floor in a hallway or beside a mirror, and 48 to 52″ beside a bed. In a pair, set both junction boxes at the same height and 28 to 36″ apart. Leave at least 8″ of clear wall on either side.
Installation Hardwired to a standard junction box — a licensed electrician is recommended. The LED is integrated, so there is no bulb to fit; 110V–240V is specified at order, and it works with a standard wall switch.

Before you order: mark the height and the outline on the wall with tape and leave it a day — a lit block reads larger in place than it does on screen, and the difference between the two sizes is bigger on a wall than it looks here. Check where your junction box actually sits before you choose, since the fixture is hardwired and moving a box means patching the wall afterwards.

Before You Order

Height Is the Part People Get Wrong

The fixture is hardwired, so the junction box decides where the light lands. Work out the height before you order — moving a box afterwards means patching the wall.

Three Positions, Three Heights

Measured to the centre of the fixture, in a room with an 8 ft ceiling

floor line Beside a bed 24″ 48–52″ to centre Beside a mirror mirror 60″ eye level 4–6″ Hallway 60–66″

Drawn to scale. Furniture, mirror and figure shown for reference only and are not included.

Beside a Bed Centre at 48–52″ off the floor, which puts the glow just above a standard 24″ nightstand and at reading height when you are sitting up. Set the pair just outside the nightstands, 28 to 36″ apart.
Beside a Mirror Centre at about 60″ — roughly eye level — and 4 to 6″ clear of the mirror edge. Light from both sides at face height is what removes the shadows an overhead fitting leaves.
Hallway or Stairs Centre at 60–66″, above head height for anyone walking past. In a run, space them 8 to 10 ft apart at a single height and keep them to one wall.
Clearance Leave at least 8″ of clear wall on either side. At 3.9″ deep it will not catch a shoulder in a corridor, but it does need air around it to read as an object rather than as something wedged into a corner.

Check your existing box first: most sconce wiring in US homes already sits at 60–66″, which suits a hallway or a mirror but is too high for a bedside. Measure what you have before you order — if it is in the wrong place, it is far cheaper to have the electrician move it while they are already there.

The Material

Why It Has to Be Real Stone

A plain rectangle has nowhere to hide. There is no ornament and no detail to carry it — the material is the design, which is why it cannot be an imitation of one.

Natural Alabaster Resin / Acrylic Imitation
The Glow Light travels into the stone and comes back softened — layered depth, no bright spot, no visible source. Flat, even transmission with no depth to it, and the LED behind often shows as a hot patch.
Switched Off Reads as a block of pale stone on the wall — an object in its own right for most of the day. Looks like what it is: a moulded panel. Unlit is where the imitation gives itself away.
One of a Kind The veining was set underground long before anyone cut it — no two blocks are ever the same. Cast from a mould, so the same printed pattern repeats on every unit sold.
Weight & Feel Cool, dense and solid in the hand — the weight is the first thing people notice out of the box. Light and hollow. It photographs like stone but does not feel like it.
Over the Years A mineral. It holds its colour for decades and gives off nothing when warm. Ambers and grows brittle sitting next to a warm source, often within a few years.
What It Says A natural material with real provenance — quiet, grounded and considered. A mass-produced look-alike, chosen to cut cost rather than to do the job.

How to Tell

Pick it up. Stone is cold to the touch and heavy for its size; resin is room temperature and light. That single test settles it faster than any photograph.

What It Costs

Stone has to be quarried, cut, ground and polished by hand, and a proportion of every block is lost to flaws. That work is most of the difference in price.

What It Asks

Real stone is porous, so it wants a dry cloth and nothing else. In return it will outlast the room it is hanging in.

If you are comparing listings: a lot of what is sold as an alabaster sconce is moulded resin with a printed pattern. Zoom in on the seller’s photographs — if the veining is identical from one unit to the next, or identical between the left and right of a pair, it is not stone.

Lit & Unlit

Light at Night, Stone by Day

Most wall lights are only considered switched on. This one is on the wall all day, so you are choosing two things at once: how it glows, and how a block of pale stone sits against your wall in daylight.

The small rectangular alabaster wall light unlit against a concrete wall.

Unlit

A Block of Pale Stone

In daylight the alabaster reads cool and cloudy, with the veining visible on the surface rather than through it. No rim, no lens, no visible fixing — it looks like a piece of stone set on the wall rather than a fitting waiting to be switched on.

The small rectangular alabaster wall light lit, glowing warm against a concrete wall.

Lit

The Whole Face Glows

Switched on, the light comes through the stone rather than out of an opening, so the entire face lights evenly and the veining shows from within. The warmth deepens where the stone runs thick and lifts where it thins.

The large rectangular alabaster wall light unlit against a concrete wall.

Large · Unlit

At 17.7″ the block carries enough height to read as a piece of wall sculpture in daylight, which is why it suits an entry or a stair wall where the light is off for most of the day.

The large rectangular alabaster wall light lit, glowing warm against a concrete wall.

Large · Lit

Lit, the taller block becomes a column of warm light rather than a point of it, spilling further up and down the wall — the difference between the two sizes shows more switched on than off.

Light Source Integrated LED at 2700K warm white. There is no bulb to buy, and no chance of a cool-white bulb turning the stone grey.
What You See Accent light, not task light. It lights the wall and the area around it, so pair it with a reading lamp if you read in bed.
No Glare The source sits behind the stone, so nothing points into the room. It can hang at eye level beside a mirror without ever being uncomfortable to look at.
Every Block Differs Lit is where the stone shows itself. Your veining will not match these photographs, and on a pair the two blocks will not match each other.
Dimming Works with a compatible LED wall dimmer. Turned low, the block reads as candlelight rather than as a lamp — send us your dimmer model to confirm before ordering.

Choose the wall for how it looks unlit: against pale plaster the block reads quiet and almost recedes; against a dark, textured or wood-clad wall it stands out as a pale object. Both work — but it is worth deciding which one you are after, since that is the version you will see for most of the day.

Care & Cleaning

Dry Cloth, and Nothing Else

Alabaster is porous. It absorbs whatever you put on it, so a water mark sits in the surface permanently rather than wiping away. Everything below follows from that one fact.

Do

· Switch the power off at the wall and let the fixture cool before you touch it.
· Dust with a dry, soft cloth or a clean make-up brush along the edges.
· Support the block with your free hand rather than leaning on it.
· Check the backplate screws once a year — stone is heavier than it looks.
· Send us a photo before treating any mark on the stone.

Don’t

× No water, glass cleaner, vinegar or alcohol on the stone — the marks do not come out.
× Never spray anything at the fixture; liquid runs down the block into the backplate.
× No abrasive pads, scouring cream or polish — they dull the polished face.
× Don’t hang anything from it or use it to steady yourself on a ladder.
× Don’t open the fixture — the LED is integrated and there is nothing inside to service.
How Often Twice a year in a bedroom, hallway or living room. In a bathroom, three or four times — hairspray and airborne product film the stone faster than dust does.
Fingerprints Most lift with a dry microfibre cloth. If one will not, a cloth barely damp with plain water, wiped dry immediately — never a cleaning product, and never on a warm fixture.
Bathrooms IP20, dry locations only. Fine beside a vanity in a ventilated room; not inside a shower zone, and not anywhere it takes direct steam.
Ageing Alabaster is a mineral. It will not yellow under the light or give off anything when warm, which is the one thing a resin panel cannot promise.
No Bulb to Change The LED is integrated, so there is no routine reason to open the fixture. Dusting is the whole of the maintenance.

If something happens to the stone: a chip or a fresh mark on alabaster is often improvable, but the fix depends on what caused it. Send us a photo before you try anything — the wrong product turns a mark that would have faded into one that stays.

Questions, Answered

Alabaster Wall Light FAQ

Which size should I choose?
Take the 11.8″ beside a vanity mirror, in a hallway, or on a narrow wall beside a bed. Take the 17.7″ for an entry, a stair wall or a fireplace, where the block should carry the wall on its own. On a wall under 24″ wide, the small size is almost always the right call.
What height should it be mounted at?
Centre it at 48–52″ off the floor beside a bed, about 60″ beside a mirror, and 60–66″ in a hallway. Most existing US sconce wiring sits at 60–66″, which suits a hallway but is too high for a bedside — measure what you have before you order.
Is the stone real alabaster?
Yes — natural alabaster, cut and polished from solid stone. The veining runs differently through every block, and the glow varies with the thickness of the cut. A moulded resin panel repeats the same printed pattern on every unit; stone cannot.
Is there a bulb to buy?
No — the LED is integrated at 2700K warm white. Nothing to fit, and no chance of a cool-white bulb turning the stone grey. It also means the light source is not user-replaceable, which is covered by the warranty.
Can it be dimmed?
Yes, with a compatible LED wall dimmer. Because the driver is built in, not every dimmer will work cleanly — send us your dimmer model before ordering and we will confirm. A mismatched dimmer is the usual cause of flicker or buzz on an integrated fixture.
How bright is it?
Accent light, not task light. The source sits behind the stone, so it lights the wall and the area around it rather than the whole room. Pair it with a reading lamp if you read in bed, or with recessed lighting in a bathroom.
If I buy two, will they match?
They read as a pair in tone and character, but alabaster is quarried, not printed — a pair is matched, not mirrored. Order the variant marked (×2) so both blocks are cut from stone selected together; ordering the second one months later is how you end up with two that do not agree.
Can I use it in a bathroom?
Beside a vanity in a dry, well-ventilated bathroom, yes. It is rated IP20, so keep it out of a shower zone and away from direct steam — the stone is porous and steam marks it permanently.
Will the stone arrive safely?
We ship natural stone every day, so it is packed to survive the journey — the block is secured in custom-cut foam inside a reinforced box with the hardware wrapped separately. If anything does arrive damaged, send us a photo and we will make it right, replacement or refund.
How do I clean it?
Power off, dry soft cloth, nothing else. Alabaster is porous, so water, glass cleaner, vinegar and alcohol leave marks that sit in the surface permanently — and never spray at the fixture, since liquid runs down the block into the backplate.
