Description

The Brennan Column Table Lamp sets a plain white paper drum shade on a tall copper column that flares out at the base into two low rectangular feet. Between them sits a short exposed rod in a warm metal finish — the only bright detail on an otherwise matte, unbroken form.

It works on a desk, a console, a nightstand, or the end of a sideboard, wherever a lamp should read as architecture rather than decoration. The shade is cut from watercolor paper rather than fabric, and it is open top and bottom, so light leaves in two directions at once: a soft pool down onto the work surface, and a wash up the wall behind that keeps the corner from going dark. Lit, the paper's own fibre texture surfaces faintly across the face of the drum — a quality a woven shade cannot produce. Nothing on the body competes with it: no turned profile, no visible hardware, no seam down the front. Offered in a white or black column finish with a white paper shade; bulb not included.

Why This One

Nothing on It Asks to Be Looked At

01

The Black Is the Metal, Not a Coat of Paint

The column is copper, darkened chemically so the colour is a conversion of the metal's own surface rather than a layer sprayed over it. There is no paint edge anywhere on the body, and a knock will not chip out a patch of bright metal underneath — which is what lets the profile run unbroken from the feet to the top with no waist, no collar and no visible seam.

02

Feet Borrowed From a Pier

At the bottom the column steps out into two flat blocks that project on opposite sides, the way the base of a bridge pier meets the ground. They widen the stance without widening the lamp, and they lift the body just clear of the surface.

03

Paper, Not Fabric — and It Shows When Lit

The drum is cut from watercolor paper. Switched off it reads as a clean flat white; switched on, the fibre in the sheet surfaces faintly across the whole face — a soft, uneven grain that a woven shade cannot produce, because thread makes a regular pattern and pulp does not.

04

Light Down to the Desk, Light Up the Wall

Open at both ends. Part of the light drops onto the surface where you are working; the rest goes up and spreads across the wall behind, so the corner lifts rather than leaving one bright circle in a dark room. The warm metal rod at the top is the only shine on the lamp.

Caring for a paper shade and a blackened finish: dust the shade with a dry, soft brush or a lint roller, working straight down the drum rather than around it. Never use water, a damp cloth or any cleaner on the paper — it stains permanently and will not recover. Wipe the column with a dry microfiber cloth only: the black is a conversion layer on the copper itself, so metal polish, scouring pads and abrasive cleaners will cut straight through it and expose bright copper that cannot be matched. Keep the lamp out of bathrooms and away from open windows in damp weather, and let the bulb cool before dusting.

Find Your Fit

Tall Enough to Read By, Narrow Enough to Share

The shade is the widest part of this lamp by a long way. The column underneath takes up barely a third of it, which is what leaves the rest of the table usable.

⌀ 15″  ×  H 27.1″
One size · widest at the shade, narrow at the column

27.1″

overall height

Taller than most bedside lamps. On a 24–30″ desk it puts the lower edge of the shade above a laptop screen, so the light reaches the desk without the bulb entering your view.

15″

shade diameter

The widest point, and a generous drum for a table lamp. Leave roughly 17″ of clear width so the shade is not pressed against a wall or a monitor on either side.

24–30″

surface height it suits

Desk, console or side table. On a low coffee table the whole lamp sits under your sightline and the upward light is wasted on the ceiling rather than the wall.

Brennan Column Table Lamp dimension diagram — 15 inch shade diameter and 27.1 inch height | HoaiLamp
Where to Set It A desk, an entry console, a sofa side table or the end of a sideboard. Allow about 17″ × 15″ of clear surface for the shade, though the column and feet need far less — you can push books and frames right up to the base.
Leave the Wall Some Room The drum is open at the top, so a good share of the light goes upward. Set it a few inches off the wall and that light spreads into a soft wash; push it flat against the wall and you get a hard bright band instead.
Setup Plug-in with a standard US two-prong plug — no wiring needed. Fit one E27 bulb, max 40W; the inline switch sits on the cord within reach of the tabletop. Bulb not included, and a warm white suits the paper best. Full details in our installation guide.

One thing to check: the lamp rests on two projecting blocks rather than a full disc, so it wants a flat, level surface — on a runner or a stack of books only one block may bear and the column will rock. And handle the shade by its rim rather than pressing on the face: paper takes a dent and does not spring back the way fabric does.

Off and On

Paper Only Shows Its Hand When Lit

Switched off, a paper shade and a fabric one look much the same. The difference is what the material does with light passing through it — which is the reason we chose it and the reason it is worth seeing both states.

Unlit

Two Blocks of Flat Colour

Off, it reads as pure geometry: a clean white cylinder above a dark tapered one, with a short warm rod between them. The paper gives back an even matte white with no sheen and no weave, and the blackened column absorbs light rather than reflecting it.

Lit

Grain in the Sheet, Light on the Wall

On, the fibre in the paper surfaces across the whole drum as a soft irregular grain — pulp does not lie down in rows the way thread does. At the same time light escapes top and bottom, dropping onto the table and lifting the wall behind.

How Far the Light Reaches A 15″ drum open at both ends covers a desk and lifts the wall behind it, so the corner reads bright rather than spotlit. It is enough to read by at the desk itself; it is not a substitute for a ceiling fixture in a large room.
Choosing the Bulb One E27, max 40W, bulb not included. A warm white around 2700K matches our photography and suits the paper — the sheet is slightly warm to begin with, so a cool bulb fights it and the shade reads a flat clinical white.
Where the Grain Shows Most A clear or filament bulb throws harder light and brings the fibre up more sharply; a frosted bulb softens it into an even glow. Neither is wrong — worth trying both if you have them in a drawer already.

Photographed with a warm white bulb — tone and grain will shift with the bulb you fit

Two Materials

Both of Them Have Opinions

Watercolor paper and blackened copper were both chosen over easier alternatives, and both ask for something in return. Here is the trade in each case, before you buy rather than after.

The Shade

Watercolor Paper

Woven cloth is made of thread laid in rows, so lit from behind it shows a regular grid. Paper is pressed pulp with no order to it at all — the fibre wanders, and light passing through picks up that irregularity as a soft grain across the whole drum. Watercolor stock in particular is heavy enough to hold its shape without a plastic liner, which is why the shade reads as one clean surface rather than fabric stretched over a frame.

What it asks of you: keep it dry and keep it unpressed. Water leaves a permanent tidemark, and a thumb pushed into the face leaves a dent that will not spring back the way fabric does. Dust it with a dry brush or a lint roller, and lift the shade by its rim.

The Column

Blackened Copper

The black is not sprayed on. Copper is darkened chemically, so the colour is a conversion of the metal's own surface rather than a skin sitting on top of it. That means no paint edge anywhere on the body, no orange-peel texture under raking light, and no chipped patch of bright metal if the lamp catches a doorframe. It is also what lets the profile run unbroken from the feet to the top — nothing had to be masked, filled or blended.

What it asks of you: dry cloth only. The darkened layer is thin, so metal polish, scouring pads and abrasive cleaners will cut straight through it and expose bright copper that cannot be matched. A microfiber cloth handles fingerprints; nothing stronger is needed.

Why Not Just Use Fabric? Because a fabric drum is the default, and it looks like one. Almost every table lamp at this size uses cloth over a styrene liner, which is durable, wipeable and completely uniform when lit. Paper is none of those things. It is here for the grain, and that is the whole argument.
Marks That Are Not Faults Faint tonal variation across the paper and slight unevenness in the depth of the black are normal in both processes and become more visible when the lamp is lit. A torn shade, a dented rim or a scratch through to bright copper is a transit or quality issue — photograph the packaging as well as the lamp and contact us.
Where Not to Put It Not a bathroom, not a kitchen worktop beside a kettle, and not on a sill under a window you leave open in wet weather. This lamp is rated IP20 and paper absorbs humidity long before you notice it. Dry indoor rooms only.

The Story

Designed to Be Overlooked

Brennan Column Table Lamp on a mid-century modern study desk, white paper drum shade above a blackened copper column | HoaiLamp

A lamp on a working desk should not be the most interesting thing on it.

That rules out most of what a designer would normally reach for. No turned profile, no contrast trim, no visible screws or collars, no decorative foot. Every one of those is a small request for attention, and on a desk you look at for eight hours they add up. So we took them out one at a time and kept going until the body was a single unbroken line from the floor to the socket.

What we left in went in for a reason rather than an effect. Two blocks at the base, because a plain cylinder on a desk looks like it might roll. One short length of warm metal at the top, because without it the pale shade appears to sit straight on the dark body and the whole thing reads as two objects stacked. And a paper shade instead of cloth, which is the one indulgence — it is less durable and more work to look after, and it is the only part of this lamp that does something a cheaper version could not.

Design Note

The Taper Is Barely There

The column narrows as it rises, but only just. Enough that it does not read as industrial pipe; not enough that anyone would describe it as a shape.

Design Note

Two Feet, Not Four

Blocks on opposite sides give the stance a direction. Four would have made a plinth, and a plinth turns a lamp into a monument.

Design Note

The Rod Stays Exposed

It would have been easy to hide the stem inside the shade. Leaving a short length visible is what separates the two volumes and keeps them from merging.

Questions, Answered

Column Table Lamp FAQ

A paper shade — is that going to survive normal use?
Yes, with two rules. Keep it dry and do not press on it. Water leaves a permanent tidemark, and a thumb pushed into the face leaves a dent that will not spring back the way fabric does. Dust it with a dry brush or a lint roller and handle it by the rim, and it will last as long as the lamp. Watercolor stock is heavy paper — it holds its own shape without a plastic liner — so it is stiffer than people expect. But it is paper, and we would rather say so plainly than have you find out with a damp cloth.
Why paper instead of fabric?
Woven cloth is thread laid in rows, so lit from behind it shows a regular grid. Paper is pressed pulp with no order to it — the fibre wanders, and light passing through picks that up as a soft irregular grain across the whole drum. Fabric is more durable, wipeable and completely uniform when lit. Paper is none of those things. It is here for the grain, and that is the whole argument.
Is the black column painted? Will it chip?
It is not paint. The column is copper, darkened chemically, so the colour is a conversion of the metal's own surface rather than a layer sprayed on top. There is no paint edge anywhere on the body, and a knock against a doorframe will not chip out a patch of bright metal. The trade-off is that the darkened layer is thin: metal polish, scouring pads and abrasive cleaners will cut straight through it and expose bright copper that cannot be matched. A dry microfiber cloth is all it needs.
Is a bulb included, and which one should I use?
No — the lamp takes one E27 bulb, max 40W, and bulbs are not included. LED or filament both fit. For colour use a warm white around 2700K, which is what our photography uses; the paper is slightly warm to begin with, so a cool bulb fights it and the shade reads a flat clinical white. A clear or filament bulb brings the fibre grain up more sharply, a frosted one softens it into an even glow — worth trying both if you have them.
Can it be dimmed?
Not on its own. The lamp has a plain inline switch, not a dimmer. To vary the level, fit a dimmable E27 bulb and add a compatible plug-in dimmer between the plug and the outlet. Check the bulb packaging says dimmable before you buy — a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer will flicker or buzz.
How big is it, and where does it fit?
15″ across the shade × 27.1″ tall — taller than most bedside lamps. On a 24–30″ desk or console the lower edge of the shade sits above a laptop screen, so light reaches the desk without the bulb entering your view. Allow about 17″ of clear width for the shade; the column and feet need far less, so books and frames can go right up to the base.
How does it switch on, and does it need wiring?
No wiring at all. It is plug-in with a standard US two-prong plug — fit a bulb, plug it in, done. There is an inline switch on the cord, within reach of the tabletop. The lamp is rated 110V–240V. Setup takes a minute; there is more detail in our installation guide.
It stands on two blocks rather than a full base — is it stable?
On a flat surface, yes — the blocks project on opposite sides and give the lamp a wider stance than the column alone. What it does not tolerate is an uneven surface: on a runner, a placemat or a stack of books only one block may bear and the column will rock. Set it directly on the desk or table.
How do I clean it, and can I use it in a bathroom?
Dry only, on both parts. Lift dust off the paper with a soft brush or a lint roller, working straight down the drum; wipe the column with a dry microfiber cloth. No water, no damp cloths, no cleaners, no polish. This lamp is rated IP20, so keep it to dry indoor rooms — not a bathroom, not beside a kettle, and not on a sill under a window you leave open in wet weather. Paper absorbs humidity long before you notice it. Let the bulb cool before dusting.

Craftsmanship

Why are good lighting fixtures worth owning?

Good light is worth the wait. Worth the investment. Because this isn't just a lamp — it's a well-made piece that brings warmth, character, and timeless beauty into your home.

01
Watercolor Paper Drum Shade

Watercolor Paper Drum Shade

Pressed paper rather than woven cloth, so lit from behind the fibre surfaces as a soft irregular grain instead of a regular thread grid. Heavy enough to hold its own shape without a plastic liner, which is why the drum reads as one clean surface.

02
Exposed Brass Rod at the Joint

Exposed Brass Rod at the Joint

A short length of brass rises from a disc at the top of the column to meet the shade — the only bright detail on the whole lamp. Leaving it visible is what separates the two volumes; hidden, the pale shade would appear to sit straight on the dark body.

03
Two Block Feet, Not a Plinth

Two Block Feet, Not a Plinth

The column steps out into flat blocks on opposite sides, giving the lamp a wider stance without widening its footprint on the desk. Four feet would have made a plinth; two give it a direction and leave room to push books right up to the base.

You're not just buying a lamp — you're bringing home a piece of art that will light your home for years to come.

The Aldric Lamp -

Where Every Evening Finds Its Corner

Every home has a corner that waits for you - the chair by the window, thebook you keep meaning to finish, the blanket that never makes it back to thecloset. The Aldric was made for that corner.

Its solid, columnar base and classic white drum shade focus a soft, warm poolof light onto your book, never into your eyes. The white interior diffuses a singlewarm bulb into a gentle wash, while the heavy dark cylinder sits firmly on your
bedside table or console, making a statement with minimal fuss.

Two Materials, Two Tempers —
Chosen Over Easier Ones

The Brennan is built from copper darkened chemically rather than painted, a shade pressed from watercolor paper rather than woven from cloth, and one short brass rod left exposed at the joint. Offered in a blackened copper or white column finish.

Nothing is decorative for its own sake. The two block feet give a plain cylinder a stance so it does not read as pipe; the exposed brass rod separates the pale shade from the dark body so they do not merge into one object. Every part earns its place.

Of Copper, Paper, and Deliberate Restraint — this is minimalism that admits its costs. Chemical blackening cannot be polished and paper cannot be wiped, but neither one is a coating, and both do something a cheaper substitute cannot.

Designed to Perfection: Premium Paper vs.

From seamless rims to uniform texture — built to hold its form and diffuse a flawless glow.
Premium
Our Premium Materials

Our Premium Materials

  • Heavyweight pressed stock — holds its own shape with no plastic liner inside.
  • Bonded flush rim — edges sealed clean, with no loose threads to work free.
  • Even pressed surface — light reads as a soft uniform grain, not blotches.
  • Single tensioned seam — nearly invisible whether the lamp is off or lit.
Standard Materials

Standard Materials

  • Loose open weave — daylight and dust pass straight through the gaps.
  • Raw cut edges — threads fray along the rim within the first few months.
  • Slubby uneven cloth — thick and thin patches show as blotches when lit.
  • Frame shows through — the wire harp and creased liner are visible from outside.
