Ansel is a forged tripod floor lamp — three tapered legs rising to a flat plate, with a slim stem carrying the shade above it. Each leg is hand-forged and keeps the irregular ripple of the tool that shaped it. The metal is darkened rather than painted, so the hollows left by hammering stay open to the light instead of filling with paint.

The shade is a wide white drum, shallow and open at the bottom — from a seated position you see the lit underside, not the bulb. Light falls broad and even over a chair or sofa end, and the open top washes the ceiling. Best beside a reading chair, at a sofa end, or in a corner that needs height rather than more furniture.

Forged Brass, Not Extruded Tube

Each leg is worked by hand, so it keeps the irregular ripple of the tool that shaped it and tapers unevenly along its run. A machine-drawn tube is identical end to end on every unit; forged brass cannot be, which is why no two of these lamps carry the same surface.

Caring for brass and paper: wipe the legs with a dry or barely damp soft cloth, and use a soft dry brush for the hollows of the forged surface. Never use metal polish, brass cleaner or anything abrasive — it strips the darkened layer at the high points and cannot be touched up. Dust the shade with a dry, soft brush or a lint roller, working down the drum. Never use water, a damp cloth or any cleaner on the paper — it stains permanently and will not recover. Keep the lamp out of bathrooms and away from open windows in damp weather, and let the bulb cool before dusting.

Where to Stand It Beside a reading chair, at the end of a sofa just behind the front line of the seat, or in a corner that needs height rather than more furniture. Check the 21.7″ at shade height, not the legs — that is what has to clear a chair back or a wall.
Turning the Tripod Three legs read differently depending on where you stand. Point one leg into the room and the other two frame the wall behind; turn two forward and the lamp squares up to the seating. Rotate it before you settle — the forged surface catches light differently on each face.
Setup Plug-in with a standard US two-prong plug — no wiring needed. Fit one E26 / E27 bulb, max 40W; the foot switch sits on the cord. The cord runs 59″ (150 cm) from the lamp. Bulbs sold separately, and 2700K warm white suits the watercolor paper best.

One thing to check: a tripod stands on three points, so it wants all three bearing evenly. On deep pile carpet, press it down and check none of the legs is riding high before you let go — at nearly six feet an uneven bearing shows as a lean. Keep the cord routed where nobody will hook a foot through it.

Unlit — Daytime

This is when the brass does the work. Daylight rakes across the forged legs and every hollow the hammer left picks up a shadow, so the metal reads as worked surface rather than as three black tubes. The joint at the top plate sits open where most tripods hide it, and the paper stays a cool, matte cream.

Lit — 2700K Warm White

The paper turns amber and the whole drum becomes the source. Because the shade is wide and open below, the light comes down broad rather than in a narrow pool — enough to cover a chair and the floor around it. The legs drop back to three dark lines standing in the glow.

What Changes The two halves of this lamp trade places. Off, the eye goes to the forged brass and the open joint; on, the brass recedes and the paper becomes the whole object. Worth knowing if the lamp will stand somewhere you look at all day — you are buying both versions.
The Bulb Decides The glow above comes from a 2700K warm white bulb. Fit a 4000K or 5000K bulb instead and the same watercolor paper reads flat and clinical — closer to a workshop than a reading corner. One E26 / E27, max 40W; a 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens, which is right for reading beside a chair. Bulbs sold separately.
Dimming Dimming depends entirely on the bulb. Fit a dimmable E26 / E27 and a compatible plug-in dimmer, and the paper drops to a low ember for late evening. A standard non-dimmable LED will flicker or refuse to dim — check the packaging before you buy.

Beside a Reading Chair

This is what the height is for. Set it 10–16″ off the chair arm and slightly behind you: far enough that the wide shade clears your shoulder, close enough that the light still reaches the page. Against bookshelves the paper does something a bare bulb can't — it lights the spines evenly without throwing a reflection across the glass or the frames beside them.

At the End of the Sofa

Stand it just behind the front line of the seat rather than level with the arm. At 70.9″ the shade reaches over the sofa back, so the light covers the whole end of the seating instead of one cushion. Against dark leather and greenery the forged legs read as a third texture in the corner — the tripod is doing as much for the room unlit as it does switched on.

In a Reading Nook

A chair in the corner of a bedroom usually has nowhere to put a lamp. Ansel stands on its own, so the nook works without adding a side table — and the broad, low glow off the paper is a softer read at night than an overhead. The foot switch means you turn it off from the chair rather than crossing the room.

The Drum, From the Side

Looking Up Into It

The drum is shallow and open below, so the lit underside is what you see from a chair — a wide, even panel of light rather than a bulb. That is what spreads the glow broad enough to cover a seat and the floor around it.

Darkened, Not Painted The black comes from treating the brass itself rather than spraying a colour over it. On a smooth surface the difference is subtle; on forged metal it decides everything. Paint pools in the hollows left by hammering and levels them out, while a darkened finish sits in the brass and leaves every ridge open to the light. It also wears into the metal over years instead of chipping off at the high points.
No Two Legs Alike Each leg is forged by hand, so it tapers unevenly and carries its own pattern of marks — denser in places, more open in others. Even the three legs on one lamp differ from each other. A machine-drawn tube is identical end to end on every unit; this cannot be, and is not meant to be.
Why Paper, Not Glass Paper scatters light more softly than glass or metal, and a wide shallow drum spreads what it scatters over a bigger area. Together that is what turns a single 5–8W bulb into a pool wide enough for a chair, with nothing bright enough at eye level to squint at.

Living with brass and paper: wipe the legs with a dry or barely damp soft cloth, and use a soft dry brush for the hollows of the forged surface — metal polish or anything abrasive strips the darkened layer at the high points first, where it shows most, and it cannot be touched up. Dust the shade with a soft brush or a lint roller, never water.

Dry Cloth, Soft Brush, Nothing Else

Both materials here are easy to keep and easy to ruin. The mistakes take seconds and cannot be undone, so they are worth two minutes of reading.

 

The Forged Brass Legs

A dry or barely damp soft cloth, wiped down the length of each leg. Dust settles in the hollows of a forged surface, so a soft dry brush reaches what a cloth skims over. Fingerprints lift straight off — there is nothing to polish and nothing that needs it.

Never

Metal polish, brass cleaner, vinegar, or any abrasive pad. A darkened surface is a chemical layer in the brass, not a coating over it — and on forged metal it strips first at the high points, where raw brass shows most against the dark hollows. It cannot be matched or touched up afterward.

 

The Watercolor Paper Shade

A dry, soft brush or a lint roller, worked down the drum rather than around it. Going across the seam catches the edge; going down it does not. Because this shade is open below, dust also collects on the inside — a hairdryer on cool, held back a foot, clears it without touching the paper.

Never

Water, a damp cloth, or any spray cleaner. Paper stains permanently, and the mark shows twice as strongly once the lamp is lit — a small damp patch becomes a dark shadow across the whole panel.

Moving It Lift by the legs, low down, with a hand steadying the top plate — never by the shade. A lamp this tall pivots as soon as you take hold of it high up, and the paper is the one part that will not survive it. Vacuuming around it, move the lamp rather than working the nozzle between the legs.
Standing It A tripod needs all three feet bearing evenly. On deep pile carpet, press it down and check none of the legs is riding high before you let go — at nearly six feet an uneven bearing shows as a lean. Keep the cord routed where nobody will hook a foot through it, and set the foot switch where it will not be stepped on in the dark.
Changing the Bulb Unplug first and let the bulb cool. Reach up through the open bottom of the shade rather than pushing against the paper from inside — the rigid frame will hold a dent. Fit one E26 / E27 bulb up to 40W, then check the seam is still turned toward the wall.

Will the paper yellow? Not under LED. Yellowing comes from heat, and a 5–8W LED runs cool enough that the shade stays the colour it arrived. A 40W incandescent bulb run for hours every evening is a different story — if you prefer the look of a filament, choose an LED filament bulb instead. Keep the lamp out of bathrooms and away from open windows in damp weather: paper absorbs humidity long before anything looks wrong.

Is a tripod stable enough at nearly six feet?

The shape, the finish and the proportions are consistent; the texture is not. If you want a surface identical to the photograph, this is not the right lamp.
Is a bulb included, and which one should I use?
