Description

Arne is a curved arm floor lamp built from two flat steel ribbons that rise from a narrow base plate, taper inward as they climb, then bend outward at the top to meet the shade from opposite sides. Nothing runs up the middle — the space where a stem would be is left open, so the watercolor paper drum appears to rest on two lines rather than sit on a post. From the front the arms draw a long shallow V; from the side they narrow to almost nothing.

The cord runs inside the metal. One arm is channelled along its inner face so the wire follows the curve rather than trailing beside it — a detail most floor lamps solve with a clip or ignore entirely. The frame is brushed gunmetal stainless steel, a fine directional grain that reads graphite in daylight and near-black at night: warmer than matte, quieter than polish. Paper diffuses more evenly than glass or metal, so the drum lights at one brightness with no filament showing. A slim floor lamp for a sofa end, a reading chair, or a corner where the floor is already spoken for.

Why This One

Two Lines Holding One Shape

01

No Stem Up the Middle

Two arms meet the shade from opposite sides and leave the centre empty. Where a conventional floor lamp puts a pole, this one puts nothing — so the drum reads as resting on two lines rather than mounted on a post, and the wall behind shows through the frame.

02

The Cord Runs Inside the Metal

One arm is channelled along its inner face, so the wire follows the curve instead of trailing beside it. Most floor lamps solve this with a plastic clip or leave the cord swinging free. On a frame this reduced, a loose wire would be the only thing you noticed.

03

Weight Where You Cannot See It

The lamp weighs 17.6 lb, and almost all of it is in the base plate. That is what lets the arms stay this thin and the footprint stay this narrow — the stability is built into the part lying flat on the floor rather than into a wide splayed foot.

04

Brushed Gunmetal, Not Flat Black

The steel carries a fine directional grain that follows each curve, so daylight travels along the arm and gives it depth. Graphite by day, near-black at night — warmer than a painted finish, quieter than polish, and it does not show every fingerprint the way gloss does.

Caring for brushed steel and paper: wipe the frame with a dry or barely damp soft cloth, always along the grain rather than across it — a brushed finish shows cross-grain marks that a matte one would hide. No abrasive pads and no polish. Dust the shade with a dry, soft brush or a lint roller, working down the drum rather than around it. Never use water or any cleaner on the paper — it stains permanently. Let the bulb cool before dusting.

Find Your Fit

Taller Than Most, on Almost No Floor

Height is what lets a floor lamp light a whole sofa instead of one cushion. Arne gets there on a base plate you could hide under a magazine.

D 21.5″  ×  H 66.5″
One size · 17.6 lb, carried low in the base plate

66.5″

overall height

Taller than most floor lamps, and deliberately so. At this height the shade sits above the back of a sofa rather than beside it, so light spreads across the whole seating run instead of pooling at the nearest cushion.

21.5″

widest point

That is the shade, sitting high on the arms. The base plate below is far narrower — measure your clearance at shade height, not at the floor, and remember the arms taper inward on the way down.

17.6 lb

net weight

Most of it sits in the base plate. That is what holds a lamp this tall and this narrow steady — and it is why the arms can stay as thin as they are without the whole thing feeling precarious.

Scale & Proportion

Shown beside a 5′6″ figure and a standard sofa arm

5′6″ / 66″ H 66.5″ 169 cm ⌀ 21.5″ shade narrow base plate 24″ sofa arm

Drawn to scale. Figure and sofa arm shown for reference only and are not included.

A line drawing gives the Arne lamp as 21.5 inches across and 66.5 inches tall.
Where to Stand It Behind a sofa arm, beside a reading chair, or in a corner. At 66.5″ the shade clears a standard sofa back, so set it just behind the front line of the seat and the light reaches the far cushion as well as the near one. Check clearance at shade height rather than at floor level — the base plate is much narrower than the 21.5″ shade.
Which Way It Faces The arms are flat bar, so the lamp reads as two tapering lines from the front and narrows to almost nothing edge-on. Face the pair to the room and the frame becomes part of the composition; turn it side-on and only the shade registers. Set the cord exit toward the wall either way.
Setup Plug-in with a standard US two-prong plug — no wiring needed. Fit one E27 bulb, max 40W; the switch sits on the cord, which runs 59″ (150 cm) from the lamp. Bulbs sold separately, and 2700K warm white suits the watercolor paper best.

One thing to check: a lamp this tall on a narrow base plate wants a level floor with the whole plate bearing. On deep pile carpet, press it down and check it is not rocking before you let go — at 66″ an uneven bearing shows as a lean. Keep the cord routed where nobody will hook a foot through it.

How It's Made

Where the Arms Meet the Shade

On a lamp reduced to two lines and a cylinder, the only place left to show workmanship is the point where those two things touch.

A channel runs the length of one arm with the braided cord seated inside it.

A Channel Cut Into the Steel

The arm is not solid bar — a groove runs its whole length along the inner face, and the braided cord seats down inside it with a retainer holding it flush. Most floor lamps clip the wire to the outside of the frame or let it hang. Here it becomes part of the profile, following the curve instead of cutting across it. From the front you see a line; from the side you see how the line was solved.

The shade's upper rim closes at a single vertical seam above the taped edge.

One Seam, Turned to the Wall

The watercolor paper is wrapped by hand over a rigid frame and closed at a single vertical seam, with the top edge bound rather than left raw. One seam instead of several is what keeps the drum reading as a continuous surface once it is lit — and it is the one line you turn toward the wall when you set the lamp down.

Brushed, Not Painted The gunmetal surface carries a fine directional grain that follows the curve of each arm, so daylight travels along it and gives the steel a graphite depth. A painted finish would read flat from every angle; a polished one would throw a hard highlight down the whole length. Brushed sits between the two, and it hides fingerprints where gloss would show every one.
Flat Bar, Tapered Both arms are flat stock rather than round tube, and each narrows as it climbs. That taper is what keeps a 66″ lamp from looking heavy at the top — and turning the bar edge-on to the room is what lets the whole frame nearly disappear when you view it from the side.
Hand-Wrapped Paper Watercolor paper over a rigid drum frame. Paper scatters light more evenly than glass or metal, so the cylinder lights at one brightness with no bright band behind the bulb and no dark side away from it. Because it is wrapped by hand, the surface keeps a slight variation from piece to piece — visible unlit, invisible once the lamp is on.

Living with brushed steel and paper: wipe the arms along the grain rather than across it — a brushed finish shows cross-grain marks that a matte one would hide. No abrasive pads, no polish. Dust the shade with a soft brush or a lint roller, working down the drum, and never water. Lift the lamp by the arms, never by the shade.

Where It Goes

Three Places Height Pays Off

At 66.5″ the shade sits above the furniture rather than beside it — which changes what a single floor lamp can cover.

Standing at the end of a sofa by the window, the lamp lights the seat from above.

01  Living Room

At the End of the Sofa

This is where the height earns its keep. A 58″ lamp beside a sofa lights the nearest cushion and leaves the far end dim; at 66.5″ the shade clears the sofa back entirely and the light reaches across the whole seat. Set it just behind the front line of the cushions, and the narrow base plate tucks in against the arm without taking floor from the room.

Beside an armchair in a library nook, the drum throws light onto the page and the shelves behind.

02  Reading Nook

Beside an Armchair

Set it 10–16″ off the chair arm and slightly behind you: the shade clears your shoulder and the light lands on the page rather than in your eyes. Against bookshelves the paper does something a bare bulb cannot — it lights the spines evenly without throwing a reflection across the glass or the frames beside them.

Next to a desk by the window, the tall frame reads as a line against the daylight.

03  Study

Beside a Desk, Against the Window

A desk usually has no surface left for a lamp. Standing beside it, Arne lights the work from above and leaves the desktop clear — and against a window the tapered arms read as two thin lines rather than as a solid mass blocking the light. By day the frame is what you notice; after dark the drum takes over.

Shown with a 2700K warm white bulb — bulbs sold separately

Off & On

Two Lines, Then a Lit Cylinder

Unlit, the eye follows the arms up from the floor. Lit, it stops at the drum — and the empty space between the arms is what makes the glow look like it is floating there.

Unlit in daylight, the two brushed arms taper up from a narrow plate to the pale drum.

Off

Unlit — Daytime

This is when the frame does the work. Daylight runs along the brushed grain and the gunmetal reads as graphite rather than black, so each arm registers as a drawn curve rather than a dark rod. Between them the wall shows straight through — a floor lamp this tall that still leaves the room visually open.

With the bulb on, the paper drum turns amber and the arms drop to two dark curves.

On

Lit — 2700K Warm White

The drum turns amber and the arms fall back to two dark curves beneath it. Because nothing runs up the middle, the lit cylinder has no stem interrupting it from any angle — and the open top sends a wash up the wall as well as down onto the seat. At 66″ that glow sits above a sofa back rather than beside it.

What Changes Off, the two arms are the subject and the shade is the thing they carry. On, that reverses — the drum becomes the only bright object in the frame and the arms read as the space around it. A lamp with a solid stem never makes that trade, because the stem stays visible against the light.
The Bulb Decides The glow above comes from a 2700K warm white bulb. Fit a 4000K or 5000K bulb instead and the watercolor paper reads flat and clinical against the gunmetal. One E27, max 40W; a 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens, which is right for reading beside a chair. Bulbs sold separately.
Dimming Dimming depends entirely on the bulb. Fit a dimmable E27 and a compatible plug-in dimmer, and the drum drops to a low ember while the arms stay clean silhouettes. A standard non-dimmable LED will flicker or refuse to dim — check the packaging before you buy.

Getting the colour right: the single most common reason a warm-material lamp disappoints at home is the bulb, not the lamp. Colour temperature changes what a shade looks like more than most people expect — our guide below covers how to pick the right one the first time.

Care

Follow the Grain, Skip the Water

Two materials, two rules. A brushed finish cares which direction you wipe; paper cares whether the cloth is dry. Neither takes more than a minute.

The Brushed Gunmetal Arms

A dry or barely damp soft cloth, drawn along the curve of each arm — the grain follows the bend, so wiping with it hides the pass entirely. The cord channel on the inner face collects dust along its length; a soft dry brush reaches into the groove where a cloth cannot.

Never

Wipe across the grain, and never use an abrasive pad or metal polish. A brushed surface shows cross-grain marks that a matte finish would hide — and once the grain is disturbed in one patch, the only fix is refinishing the whole arm.

The Watercolor Paper Drum

A dry, soft brush or a lint roller, worked down the drum rather than around it. The shade sits high at 66″, so a lint roller on a handle saves you reaching over it — and pressing down on the rim from above is what pushes a drum out of round.

Never

Water, a damp cloth, or any spray cleaner. Paper stains permanently, and on a cylinder lit from within the mark shows from every angle — there is no back side to turn toward the wall.

Moving It Lift by both arms, low down — never by the shade. With no stem up the middle, the drum is carried at two points on thin metal; a hand on the shade puts the whole 17.6 lb through those two joints. Taking hold of a single arm twists the frame, so use both. Vacuuming, move the lamp rather than working the nozzle around the base plate.
Standing It The weight sits in the base plate, which is narrow for a lamp this tall — so it wants a level floor with the whole plate bearing. On deep pile carpet, press it down and check it is not rocking before you let go; at 66″ an uneven bearing reads as a lean from across the room. Route the cord behind furniture rather than across a walking path.
Changing the Bulb Unplug first and let the bulb cool. Reach in through the open top rather than pressing against the paper from the side — the drum sits above eye level for most people, so it is easier to feel for the socket than to see it. Fit one E27 bulb up to 40W, then check the shade is sitting level on both arms before you plug back in.

Will the paper yellow? Not under LED. Yellowing comes from heat, and a 5–8W LED runs cool enough that the drum stays the colour it arrived. A 40W incandescent run for hours every evening is a different story — if you prefer the look of a filament, choose an LED filament bulb rather than a true incandescent. Keep the lamp out of bathrooms and away from open windows in damp weather: paper absorbs humidity long before anything looks wrong.

Questions, Answered

Curved Arm Floor Lamp FAQ

Is 66.5″ too tall for a normal room?
No — and the height is the point. Most floor lamps sit around 58–62″, which puts the shade beside a sofa rather than above it, so the light pools at the nearest cushion. At 66.5″ the drum clears a standard sofa back and the light reaches across the whole seat. Under an 8 ft ceiling there is still about two and a half feet of air above it, so it reads as tall rather than crowded.
Is it stable? The base looks narrow for a lamp that tall.
Yes. The lamp weighs 17.6 lb (8 kg) and almost all of it is in the base plate — the weight is in the plate rather than in the width of it, which is what lets the footprint stay this small. What matters is the setup: it needs a level floor with the whole plate bearing. On deep pile carpet, press it down and check it is not rocking before you let go, since at this height an uneven bearing reads as a lean.
Where does the cord go? I don't see it on the frame.
Inside the metal. One arm is channelled along its inner face and the braided cord seats down into that groove with a retainer holding it flush, so the wire follows the curve instead of trailing beside it. Most floor lamps clip the cord to the outside of the frame or leave it hanging — on a frame this reduced, a loose wire would be the only thing you noticed.
Is a bulb included, and which one should I use?
No — the lamp takes one E27 base up to 40W and bulbs are not included. Use warm white around 2700K: that is what our photography uses, and it is what warms the paper against the gunmetal. Cool white at 4000K or above makes the drum read flat and clinical. A 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens, right for reading beside a chair. For dimming, fit a dimmable bulb and a compatible plug-in dimmer.
How much floor space does it actually need?
Less than the 21.5″ figure suggests. That measurement is the shade, sitting high on the arms — the base plate below is far narrower, and the arms taper inward as they descend. So the lamp tucks into a gap tighter than its widest point, and what you should check is clearance at shade height rather than at floor level: make sure nothing sits directly above where the drum will land.
How do I clean a brushed finish without marking it?
Wipe along the grain, never across it. The brushing follows the bend of each arm, so drawing the cloth along the curve hides the pass entirely while a cross-grain wipe leaves a mark a matte finish would have hidden. No abrasive pads and no metal polish. The cord channel collects dust along its length — a soft dry brush reaches into the groove. Shade: a dry soft brush or lint roller worked down the drum, and never water on the paper. Rated IP20 — dry indoor spaces only. Lift the lamp by both arms, never by the shade.

The Arne Curved Series — Where Calm Design Meets Evening Warmth

Every home has a quiet sanctuary waiting for the end of the day — the leather armchair by the window, a warm mug of coffee, the half-read book resting on the side table. The Arne Floor Lamp was crafted to complete that moment.

Its twin curved stainless steel legs rise with graceful architecture, carrying the cord discreetly along its inner track to keep the silhouette clean and uncluttered. Capped with a refined watercolor paper drum shade, it filters light into a soft, textured glow that fills the room with tranquil warmth, while the low-profile base rests effortlessly in any space.

Mid-Century Elegance —

Grace in Dual Form

The Arne is crafted from hand-brushed stainless steel with a rich dark finish — featuring two upward-sweeping curved legs, a low-profile weighted base, and a refined drum shade made of textured watercolor paper.

No curve exists without purpose. The outward arching stems create an open, airy silhouette while offering sturdy support; the inner channel discreetly conceals the braided cord to keep lines pure. Elegance rooted in thoughtful engineering.

Of Steel, Paper, and Quiet Radiance — this is modern design at its most poetic: organic curves, honest craftsmanship, and a gentle light that warm the room without ever demanding attention.

Our Premium Materials

  • Natural cotton-pulp base — premium heavy-weight watercolor paper offers structural durability and clean form retention
  • Cold-pressed medium texture — subtle organic grain delivers soft, uniform light diffusion without harsh glares
  • Precision-sealed rolled edge — seamless, clean rim finishing that prevents fraying and ensures lasting elegance
  • Pure ambient illumination — creates a soothing, glare-free glow with sophisticated, architectural warmth
Standard Materials

Standard Materials

  • Unprocessed loose fibers — raw, unrefined burlap prone to shedding, loose threads, and rough frayed edges
  • Irregular open weave — coarse mesh gaps lead to uneven light leakage and harsh, patchy illumination
  • Unstable woven structure — prone to warping over time and easily damaged by heat and ambient humidity
  • Dust-trapping rough surface — coarse natural fibers catch lint easily and are difficult to clean or maintain
