Caring for brass and paper: wipe the stem and legs with a dry or barely damp soft cloth — no polish or abrasive cleaner, which strips a darkened finish back toward raw brass and cannot be touched up. Where to Stand It Beside a reading chair, at the end of a sofa just behind the front line of the seat, or in a corner. Allow a clear 10″ × 10″ of floor and a spot where nothing will catch the cord. At 55″ this is a chair-side lamp rather than a room-corner one — it works next to seating, not standing alone against a bare wall.
Turning the Shade The shade is square, not round. Square it to the wall behind and it reads as a flat panel; turn it forty-five degrees and two corners catch the light at once. Worth trying both before you settle — and turn the seam toward the wall either way.

Where the Stem Becomes Three

The split happens in the last few inches, low enough that the lamp still reads as one line from across the room. Each leg carries the dents of the tool that shaped it, and the finish sits deeper where the metal was worked hardest — which is why the three legs never match each other exactly.

Four Panels, One Frame

The watercolor paper is wrapped by hand over a rigid frame and folded at each corner rather than seamed across a face. From below you can see the struts holding the square true — and how little of the frame reads through the paper once the lamp is on.

Why Square Beats Round

A round shade grades evenly all the way around, so it looks the same from every angle. Four flat panels do something different: each face takes the light at its own angle, so one reads warm amber while the next stays pale. That contrast at the corner is the whole reason to use a square shade.

Darkened, Not Painted The black comes from treating the brass itself rather than spraying a colour over it. On a smooth surface the difference is subtle; on forged metal it decides everything. Paint pools in the dents left by the hammer and levels them out, while a darkened finish sits in the brass and leaves every mark open to the light. It also wears into the metal over years instead of chipping off at the raised edges.
No Two Legs Alike Because the metal is worked by hand, the pattern of marks runs denser in some places and more open in others, and the curve of each leg differs slightly from the next. Even the three legs on one lamp are not identical. The proportions, the height and the finish are consistent; the surface is not, and is not meant to be.
Weight Where It Belongs The lamp weighs 8.8 lb and carries nearly all of it low, in the legs and the base of the stem. The shade and upper stem are the light part. That distribution is what lets a three-point base hold a 55″ lamp steady on a rug, where a top-heavy lamp on a flat plate would rock.

Unlit — Daytime

This is when the brass does the work. Daylight rakes across the forged stem and every dent picks up a shadow, so the metal reads as worked surface rather than as a black rod. The square above stays a cool, matte cream, and because the legs only split at the floor, the whole lamp resolves into one line against the wall.

Lit — 2700K Warm White

The paper turns amber and the flat square becomes a form: one face reads warm, the face beside it stays paler, and the corner between them draws a line down the shade. Open above and below, it sends light onto a page and up the wall at once — the stem drops back to a silhouette standing in the glow.

What Changes A round shade looks the same from every angle whether it is on or off. A square one does not: switching it on splits the shade into faces of different brightness, and the corner nearest you becomes the edge of the form. Which face you show the room is a decision — rotate the lamp before you settle on it.
The Bulb Decides The glow above comes from a 2700K warm white bulb. Fit a 4000K or 5000K bulb instead and the same watercolor paper reads flat and clinical, and the difference between the faces collapses. One E27, max 40W; a 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens, which is right for reading beside a chair. Bulbs sold separately.
Dimming Dimming depends entirely on the bulb. Fit a dimmable E27 and a compatible plug-in dimmer, and the paper drops to a low ember for late evening. A standard non-dimmable LED will flicker or refuse to dim — check the packaging before you buy.

01  Reading Nook

Beside an Armchair

This is the height it was drawn for. Set it 10–16″ off the arm and slightly behind you and the bottom of the shade sits just above your shoulder — close enough to read by without a taller lamp's light spilling across the whole room. Against a window it also earns its keep by day, when the forged stem reads as a dark line in the light.

02  Living Room

At the End of the Sofa

The ten-inch footprint is what makes this work — it slides into the gap between a sofa arm and the wall where a splayed tripod or a weighted disc would not fit. Turn the shade forty-five degrees to the seating and the corner faces the room, which is when the square reads as a form rather than a flat panel.

03  Bedroom

Standing Where the Nightstand Ends

Where the nightstand is too small for a lamp, or already full. At 55″ the shade sits at about the height a table lamp would reach on the surface, so you get the same reading light with the surface left free. The open top washes the wall behind — softer at night than a downward pool alone.

Care

Dry Cloth, Soft Brush, Nothing Else

Both materials here are easy to keep and easy to ruin. The mistakes take seconds and cannot be undone, so they are worth two minutes of reading.

 

The Forged Brass Stem & Legs

A dry or barely damp soft cloth, wiped down the length of the stem. Dust settles in the dents of a forged surface, so a soft dry brush reaches what a cloth skims over — the three legs need it most, sitting at floor level where dust gathers. Fingerprints lift straight off; there is nothing to polish.

Never

Metal polish, brass cleaner, vinegar, or any abrasive pad. A darkened surface is a chemical layer in the brass, not a coating over it — and on forged metal it strips first at the raised edges, where raw brass shows brightest against the dark dents. It cannot be matched or touched up afterward.

 

The Watercolor Paper Shade

A dry, soft brush or a lint roller, worked down each flat panel rather than across the corners — a square shade is most vulnerable at its folded edges, where dragging a cloth sideways will lift the paper. Because it is open above and below, dust also settles inside: a hairdryer on cool, held back a foot, clears it without contact.

Never

Water, a damp cloth, or any spray cleaner. Paper stains permanently, and on a flat panel the mark has nowhere to hide — once lit, a small damp patch reads as a dark shadow across that whole face.

Moving It Lift by the stem, low down, with a hand steadying the legs — never by the shade. At 8.8 lb the lamp is light enough to carry one-handed, which is exactly why people grab the top; the paper is the one part that will not survive it. Vacuuming, move the lamp rather than working the nozzle between the three feet.
Standing It Three feet need all three bearing evenly. Changing the Bulb Unplug first and let the bulb cool. Reach up through the open bottom of the shade rather than pushing against a panel from inside — the rigid frame will hold a crease at the corner. Fit one E27 bulb up to 40W, then check the shade is still square to the wall (or turned to the angle you chose).

Will the paper yellow? Not under LED. Yellowing comes from heat, and a 5–8W LED runs cool enough that the shade stays the colour it arrived. A 40W incandescent bulb run for hours every evening is a different story — if you prefer the look of a filament, choose an LED filament bulb instead. Keep the lamp out of bathrooms and away from open windows in damp weather: paper absorbs humidity long before anything looks wrong.

At 55.1″ Bram is a chair-side lamp, not a room-corner one — the shade sits just above your shoulder when seated, which is where light falls on a page instead of into your eyes. Beside an armchair or a sofa end it is the right height. Standing alone against a bare wall to light a whole room, it is not; for that you want something closer to 65–70″.

Because the metal is worked by hand, the surface will not match the photographs mark for mark, and the three legs on one lamp differ from each other. Is a bulb included, and which one should I use?
No — the lamp takes one E27 base up to 40W and bulbs are not included. Use warm white around 2700K: that is what our photography uses, and it is what separates the four faces of the shade into different tones. Cool white at 4000K or above makes the paper read flat and collapses that contrast. A 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens, right for reading beside a chair. For dimming, fit a dimmable bulb and a compatible plug-in dimmer.
How do I clean it, and can I use it in a bathroom?
