Description

Kell is a framed steel table lamp built as one object inside another. Four slim posts rise from a flat square plate to a square cap above, and the watercolor paper cylinder hangs within that frame — touching nothing, resting on nothing. A round volume inside a rectangular cage: the tension between those two shapes is the whole design, and it is why the lamp reads as architecture rather than as a shade on a stem.

The frame is 304 stainless steel in matte black — the grade used for kitchen sinks and cookware, chosen because it resists rust where plated steel eventually spots. Posts under a quarter-inch thick keep the structure visually weightless, so the eye goes to the glowing cylinder rather than to what holds it. Paper diffuses light more evenly than glass or metal: the whole cylinder lights at one brightness with no filament showing, and the open top sends a wash up onto the underside of the cap. Best on a desk, an entryway console or a bedside table where the lamp is meant to be looked at.

Caring for steel and paper: wipe the frame with a dry or barely damp soft cloth — 304 stainless needs no polish, and abrasive pads will scratch the matte finish. Dust the shade with a dry, soft brush or a lint roller, working down the cylinder rather than across the seam. Where to Set It A desk corner, a nightstand, a shelf, or an entryway console. It needs a clear 7.5″ × 7.5″ and nothing above it. At this scale it also works in a group — two on a long console, or one at each end of a bookshelf run.
Turning the Frame The frame is square, so it reads differently depending on the angle. Face one flat side to the room and it sits quiet and architectural; turn a corner forward and you see two posts at once with the cylinder between them. Set the cord exit toward the wall either way.
Setup Plug-in with a standard US two-prong plug — no wiring needed. Fit one E26 / E27 bulb, max 40W; the push-button switch sits on the cord. Bulbs sold separately, and 2700K warm white suits the watercolor paper best.

One thing to check: the cord runs 39.4″, which is shorter than most table lamps. Measure from the outlet to where the lamp will actually stand before you order — on a console set away from the wall, or a desk with the socket behind a cabinet, you may want the longer cord. Frame First, Then the Glow

Unlit, the four black posts draw the shape and the cylinder sits quietly inside them. Lit, the paper takes over and the frame reduces to four thin lines around a column of light.

Unlit — Daytime

This is when the structure does the work. Matte black gives back no highlight, so each post reads as a drawn line rather than a shiny rod — and the eye follows the rectangle they make before it reaches the cylinder inside. Switched off, Kell is a small piece of architecture on the table.

Lit — 2700K Warm White

The cylinder turns amber and the posts fall back to four dark lines around it. Because the shade is open at the top, light also rises and catches the underside of the cap — so you get two lit surfaces at once, a column and a plane, with the bulb itself hidden between them.

What Changes The gap between the shade and the frame is what you notice off; the light filling that gap is what you notice on. A conventional lamp puts the shade on a stem and the two become one object. Here they stay separate, and switching on is what reveals the space between them.
The Bulb Decides The glow above comes from a 2700K warm white bulb. Fit a 4000K or 5000K bulb instead and the watercolor paper reads flat and clinical against the black. One E26 / E27, max 40W; a 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens, which is right for an accent lamp at this scale. Bulbs sold separately.
Dimming Dimming depends entirely on the bulb. Fit a dimmable E26 / E27 and a compatible plug-in dimmer, and the cylinder drops to a low ember while the frame stays a clean silhouette. A standard non-dimmable LED will flicker or refuse to dim — check the packaging before you buy.

01  Living Room

Both Ends of the Sofa

One lamp at one end of a sofa lights half the seating and leaves the other half dark. Two at matching height flatten that difference — the whole run reads as evenly lit rather than as one bright corner. At this scale they also leave the side tables usable, which a full-size table lamp on a small surface does not.

02  Bedroom

Either Side of the Bed

A pair frames the headboard and gives each person their own push-button switch on the cord. Because the footprint is only 7.5″ square, both nightstands stay clear for a book, a glass and a phone — and at 12.6″ the glow sits low and soft rather than at eye level when you are lying down.

Why a Square Repeats Well Two round shades side by side read as two lamps. Two square frames read as a set — the vertical posts line up across the room and the eye connects them. It is the same reason architectural details repeat in pairs: a rectangle repeated becomes a rhythm, a circle repeated stays two circles.
Match the Bulbs Use the same bulb in both — same colour temperature, same wattage, ideally the same brand. Two paper shades lit at 2700K and 3000K side by side read as one warm lamp and one slightly wrong one, and it is hard to un-see once you notice it.
Face Them the Same Way Turn both frames to the same angle — either a flat side to the room or a corner forward. Mirroring them looks accidental; matching them looks intended. Set both cord exits toward the wall while you are at it.

Before you order two: check that both surfaces are the same height, and check the outlet distance on each side. The cord runs 39.4″ — on the far side of a bed, or at the end of a sofa away from the wall, one of the two may need the longer cord. Ask us and we will send it with the order.

How It's Made

Nothing Hidden, Top or Bottom

Four posts, two plates, and one hanging cylinder — every joint that holds this lamp together is visible. On a design this reduced, the assembly has to be the detail.

The Cap, Screwed Not Welded

Two flat screws hold the plate to each corner post, sunk level with the surface rather than proud of it. A welded joint would have to be ground and refinished, and on matte black that repair always shows. Screws leave the assembly honest — and they mean the frame can be taken apart if it ever needs to be.

Where the Shade Hangs From

The cylinder carries no stem of its own. A bracket drops from the underside of the cap and takes the whole shade from above, holding it clear of all four posts and off the base entirely. That single point of contact is what buys the floating look — and it is why the shade lifts off in one motion for cleaning.

A Plate Thin Enough to Vanish

The base is a single sheet, thin at the edge so it reads as a line on the tabletop rather than as a block. The centre stem carries the socket and the braided cord runs out across the plate — visible, but low enough that it disappears behind whatever else is on the table.

Why 304, Not Plated Steel 304 is the grade used for kitchen sinks and cookware. Plated steel puts its rust resistance in a coating; scratch through it at an edge or a screw hole and corrosion starts underneath. 304 resists rust in the material itself, which matters most exactly where this lamp is thinnest — the posts, the plate edges, and the screw seats.
Matte, on Purpose A gloss finish would throw a bright highlight down the length of every post, and four highlights would compete with the one thing meant to glow. Matte black gives nothing back, so the frame stays a set of drawn lines and the lit cylinder keeps the attention.
Hand-Wrapped Paper The shade is watercolor paper wrapped by hand over a rigid frame and closed at a single vertical seam. Paper scatters light more evenly than glass or metal, and because the cylinder is narrow, the whole surface lights at one brightness — no bright band behind the bulb, no dark side away from it.

Living with steel and paper: the frame needs a dry cloth and nothing else — no polish, and no abrasive pad, which would scratch the matte finish even though the steel beneath would survive it. The shade needs a dry brush or a lint roller, and never water. Lift the lamp by the frame, never by the hanging shade.

Care

One Material Forgives, the Other Doesn't

304 stainless is about as low-maintenance as metal gets. The paper is not. Knowing which is which takes two minutes and saves the shade.

 

The 304 Steel Frame

A dry or barely damp soft cloth, run down the length of each post. There is no plating to wear through and no polish to reapply — 304 resists rust in the metal itself, so a wipe is genuinely all it needs. The flat cap collects dust faster than the posts do; that is the surface to check.

Never

Abrasive pads, scouring cream, or steel wool. The steel underneath would survive them; the matte black finish on top would not, and a scratch through it shows as a bright line against the black. Skip metal polish too — it adds shine this lamp is not meant to have.

 

The Watercolor Paper Shade

A dry, soft brush or a lint roller, worked down the cylinder rather than around it. The frame makes this awkward — you cannot get a hand all the way round with the posts in the way. A soft brush reaches between them, or lift the shade off its hanger and dust it clear of the frame.

Never

Water, a damp cloth, or any spray cleaner. Paper stains permanently, and on a cylinder lit from within the mark shows from every angle in the room — there is no back side to turn toward the wall.

Moving It Lift by the frame — a post or the base plate — never by the shade. The cylinder hangs from the cap and is not fixed to anything below it, so taking hold of it puts the whole weight of the lamp on the paper. This is the single mistake most likely to damage this lamp.
Where Not to Put It The steel would be fine in a bathroom; the paper would not. Rated IP20 — dry indoor spaces only. Keep it off a kitchen counter near the sink and away from an open window in damp weather: paper absorbs humidity and softens long before anything looks wrong.
Changing the Bulb Unplug first and let the bulb cool. Lift the shade off its hanger rather than reaching in past it — the frame leaves little room for a hand, and pressing against the paper from inside will leave a crease. Fit one E26 / E27 bulb up to 40W, then rehang the shade so it sits level and clear of all four posts.

Will the paper yellow? Not under LED. Yellowing comes from heat, and a 5–8W LED runs cool enough that the shade stays the colour it arrived. A 40W incandescent bulb in a shade this size is a different story — the cylinder is narrow and sits close to the source, so if you prefer the look of a filament, choose an LED filament bulb rather than a true incandescent.

How is the shade held? It looks like it's floating.
It hangs from the cap above. A slim bracket drops from the underside of the top plate and carries the whole cylinder from a single point — the shade touches none of the four posts and does not rest on the base at all. That gap on every side is the design. It also means the shade lifts off in one motion when you want to dust it or change a bulb.
Is 12.6″ tall enough to read by?
Not really — and it is worth knowing before you order. At 12.6″ Kell is an accent lamp, sitting well below eye level on a desk or nightstand. The glow reads as atmosphere rather than as task light. If you read in bed or work at the desk it stands on, pair it with a taller lamp; if you want a warm point of light on a crowded surface, this is exactly the size for it.
304 stainless steel — can it go in a bathroom?
The frame could; the shade cannot. 304 is the grade used for kitchen sinks, and it resists rust in the metal itself rather than in a coating over it — so the steel handles humidity without spotting. But the shade is paper, which absorbs moisture and softens long before anything looks wrong. The lamp is rated IP20: dry indoor spaces only. Cool white at 4000K or above makes the paper read flat and clinical. A 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens, right for an accent lamp at this scale. For dimming, fit a dimmable bulb and a compatible plug-in dimmer.
