Description

The Merrow Platform Table Lamp stands a tall rectangular shade on a low metal platform carried by four tapered legs — a base built less like a lamp foot and more like a small bench. A short square stem rises from the centre of the platform to meet the shade, leaving open air on all four sides beneath it.

It suits a console, a sideboard, a bedside table, or a desk where a round drum would feel soft against the surrounding lines. The shade is squared rather than turned, so its flat faces read as planes and light leaves them evenly instead of curving away toward the edges. Because the platform sits clear of the tabletop on its legs, the lamp casts a shadow line underneath it and stops short of blocking whatever is set behind. The metal surfaces carry a fine directional grain that catches light along the top face while the legs stay dark.

Why This One

A Base That Stands Instead of Sits

01

The Base Is a Bench, Not a Weight

Four tapered legs carry a flat platform a short distance above the table, so the base holds its load the way a piece of furniture does rather than the way a paperweight does. Each leg narrows as it drops and lands on a small flat face, which keeps a low wide base from reading as heavy — and leaves a shadow line underneath that a solid block never has.

02

Squared All the Way Up

Rectangular platform, square stem, rectangular shade. Nothing on this lamp is turned on a lathe, so its flat faces read as planes against a wall and the light leaving them stays even edge to edge instead of falling away around a curve the way a round drum does.

03

Brushed First, Then Darkened

The brass is given a directional grain and only then chemically blackened, so the brushing stays legible through the finish. Under a warm bulb the metal reads bronze rather than flat black, and the top face of the platform catches a soft sheen that shifts as you move past it.

04

Paper, Not Cloth — and It Shows When Lit

Woven fabric is thread in rows and lights up as a regular grid. This shade is pressed paper: the fibre wanders, so light passing through picks it up as a soft irregular grain across each flat face. Less forgiving than cloth, and the one part of this lamp a cheaper version could not copy.

Caring for a paper shade and blackened brass: dust the shade with a dry, soft brush or a lint roller, working down the flat panels rather than across the corners. Never use water, a damp cloth or any cleaner on the paper — it stains permanently and will not recover. Wipe the platform and legs with a dry microfiber cloth only: the black is a chemical conversion on the brass itself, so metal polish, scouring pads and abrasive cleaners will cut through it and expose bright brass that cannot be matched. Keep the lamp out of bathrooms and away from open windows in damp weather, and let the bulb cool before dusting.

Find Your Fit

Small Enough for a Shelf, Squared Enough to Notice

At under 13 inches tall this is a lamp for a shelf, a nightstand or the corner of a console — not a room light. What it gives you at that size is a piece of geometry rather than a scaled-down version of something bigger.

L 8.6″  ×  W 5.5″  ×  H 12.8″
One size · rectangular footprint with a clear front and side

12.8″

overall height

Low enough to fit a bookshelf or sit under a wall-mounted picture without crowding it. On a nightstand the glow stays below your eye line when you are lying down.

8.6 × 5.5″

rectangular footprint

Three inches deeper one way than the other, which is what lets it tuck into a narrow shelf or against the back of a console where a square base would not fit.

Pairs

reads well in twos

At this scale one lamp on a long console can look stranded. Two at either end of a sideboard, or one on each nightstand, is where the geometry starts to work.

Merrow Platform Table Lamp dimension diagram — 8.6 inch length, 5.5 inch width and 12.8 inch height | HoaiLamp
Where to Set It A nightstand, a bookshelf, an entry console or the corner of a desk. Allow about 10″ × 7″ of clear surface. Because the platform stands on legs rather than sitting flat, you can run the cord out from underneath in whichever direction the outlet happens to be.
Which Face Forward The base and shade are rectangular, not square, so the lamp looks different from the front than from the side. Turn the wide face toward the room and it reads as a lit panel; turn the narrow face forward and it reads as a slim upright. Both work — try it before you settle.
Setup Plug-in with a standard US two-prong plug — no wiring needed. Fit one E27 bulb, max 40W; the inline switch sits on the cord within reach of the tabletop. Bulb not included, and a warm white suits the paper best. Full details in our installation guide.

One thing to check: the lamp rests on four tapered legs rather than a flat plate, so it wants a level surface — on a runner or a stack of books one leg may lift. And handle the shade by its rim rather than pressing on a face: paper takes a dent and does not spring back the way fabric does, and the flat panels show a crease more readily than a curved drum would.

Off and On

Both Materials Change When the Bulb Comes On

The paper gives up its grain and the darkened brass gives up its warmth — neither of which a photograph on a white background can sh ow you. Worth seeing the lamp in both states before you decide.

Unlit

Pure Geometry, Nothing Else

Off, it reads as two rectangles and four legs: a flat white block above a dark platform, with a shadow line running underneath. The paper is an even matte with no sheen, and the brass keeps its brushed grain visible but stays close to black in daylight.

Lit

Grain in the Paper, Bronze in the Brass

On, the fibre in the sheet surfaces across each flat panel, and warm light spilling down catches the brushed grain on the platform — the black lifts toward bronze, which is the brass underneath showing through the darkening.

About the Colour of the Base Worth saying plainly: the finish is darkened brass, not black paint. Under daylight or a white studio background it photographs close to black; under a warm bulb it warms noticeably toward bronze. Both of these images are the same lamp. Expect it to sit somewhere between the two in your own room.
How Far the Light Reaches At 12.8″ this is an accent lamp. It lights a nightstand, a shelf or the corner of a console and throws a warm pool onto the surface around it — enough to move around by at night, not enough to read a book under for an hour. Pair it with a taller lamp if the room has no other source.
Choosing the Bulb One E27, max 40W, bulb not included. A warm white around 2700K is what these photographs use and what brings the bronze up in the brass. A cool bulb flattens both materials at once — the paper reads clinical and the base goes back to looking like plain black metal.

Photographed with a warm white bulb — both the paper grain and the bronze tone shift with the bulb you fit

Two Is the Right Number

A Small Lamp Works Harder in Pairs

At 12.8″ tall a single Merrow can look stranded on a long surface. Set two of them and the geometry starts doing something a taller lamp cannot: it frames the space between them instead of filling it.

A pair of Merrow platform table lamps on matching bedside nightstands either side of a bed | HoaiLamp

Either Side of a Bed

Low Enough to Read Past

This is where the short height earns its keep. Sitting up in bed, the top of the shade stays below your eye line, so you get light on the page without a bright panel in your peripheral vision. Turn the wide face toward the bed on both sides and the two lamps read as a matched pair rather than two separate objects.

Two Merrow platform table lamps at either end of a long credenza | HoaiLamp

Both Ends of a Credenza

Bookends for a Long Surface

One lamp on a six-foot credenza leaves the other end looking unfinished. Two at the ends give the surface a start and a stop, and the low height keeps whatever hangs on the wall above — art, a mirror — completely clear. Leave the middle for the things you actually use it for.

Staggered on Open Shelves

The One Placement a Tall Lamp Cannot Take

Most table lamps are too tall for a bookcase. At 12.8″ this one fits a standard shelf opening with room above, and the 5.5″ depth keeps it from overhanging the front edge. Set on two shelves rather than side by side, the pair lights the case from within instead of shining at it.

How Far Apart Far enough that the two pools of light do not overlap into one bright band — on a credenza that usually means setting them close to the ends rather than a third of the way in. On shelves, stagger them diagonally rather than stacking one directly above the other.
Matching Bulbs Matters Use the same bulb in both. A pair only reads as a pair if the colour temperature matches — one 2700K next to one 3000K is a difference you will notice every evening, and it is the most common reason a matched set stops looking matched.
Two Outlets, or One Each lamp has its own cord and its own inline switch, so a pair needs two outlets or one shared power strip. Because the platform stands on legs, you can run each cord out from underneath toward whichever side the outlet is on.

The Story

We Built a Structure Instead of a Weight

Merrow Platform Table Lamp on a sofa side table in a modern living room, rectangular paper shade above a four-legged brass platform | HoaiLamp

Every lamp has the same problem at the bottom: something has to hold it down without looking like ballast.

The usual answer is mass. A weighted disc, a solid block, a plinth — heavy enough that nothing tips, and visually inert because the only thing it is doing is being heavy. It works, and it is why so many table lamps look like they are standing in a puddle of their own base.

We built a structure instead. Four legs, a flat platform, open air underneath. The load is carried the way a bench carries it rather than the way a paperweight sits, and the gap that leaves is the whole point — a shadow line under the platform, light reaching the surface below, and a base you can see through rather than around. The shade above follows from that: a curve would have softened the geometry the base spent all its effort establishing, so it is squared too.

Design Note

Four Legs, Not a Block

A solid base would have been cheaper and heavier. Legs make the lamp read as built rather than cast, and they leave a shadow line no block can produce.

Design Note

The Taper Removes Weight

Each leg narrows on its way down and lands on a small flat face. Straight legs would have looked like table legs; tapered ones let a low wide base appear to hover.

Design Note

Brushed Before Blackened

The grain goes on the brass first, the darkening second. Reverse that order and you get flat black; this way the brass keeps showing through under a warm bulb.

Brushed brass, chemically darkened, with a pressed paper shade — no coatings on either

Materials & Care

Neither One Is a Coating

Watercolor paper and darkened brass were both chosen over easier alternatives. Both give something a cheaper substitute cannot, and both ask for something back. Here is the trade in each case — before you buy rather than after.

The Shade

Watercolor Paper

Woven cloth is thread laid in rows, so lit from behind it shows a regular grid. Paper is pressed pulp with no order to it — the fibre wanders, and light passing through picks that up as a soft irregular grain. Watercolor stock is heavy enough to hold its own shape without a plastic liner, which is what lets each flat panel read as a clean plane rather than cloth stretched on a frame.

What it asks of you: stay dry, stay off the faces. Flat panels crease more readily than a curved drum, and paper does not spring back.

The Base

Blackened Brushed Brass

The brass is brushed first and chemically darkened second, so the grain stays legible through the finish and the metal underneath keeps showing through. That is why it photographs near-black on a white background but warms toward bronze under a lamp. It also means no paint edge anywhere, and no chipped patch of bright metal if the base knocks a wall.

What it asks of you: dry cloth only. The darkened layer is thin and polish goes straight through it.

Cleaning the Paper Shade
Dusting A lint roller is the best tool for this, and a soft dry make-up or pastry brush is the second best. Work straight down each flat panel, never across the corners — the corners are the folded edges and rubbing across them wears the fibre open. Support the panel from behind with your other hand so it is not flexing while you work.
Never Use Water, a damp cloth, a baby wipe, glass cleaner, upholstery foam, or a vacuum with a brush head. Any liquid leaves a tidemark that dries darker than the surrounding paper and does not come out — there is no recovery step for this, which is why it is worth reading twice. A vacuum pulls the panel out of shape even on low suction.
Handling and Moving Lift the lamp by the brass platform, never by the shade. A thumb pressed into a flat panel leaves a dent that stays, and the crease shows up far more clearly once the lamp is lit than it does in daylight. Worth mentioning to anyone else who dusts or moves things in the room.
If Something Lands on It Dry dust or a smudge of dry dirt: lift it with the lint roller and leave it at that. Do not damp-blot it — that turns a faint mark into a permanent ring roughly twice the size. Grease or liquid cannot be removed from this material; contact us about a replacement shade rather than attempting it.
Where Not to Put It Not a bathroom, not a kitchen counter beside a kettle or a stovetop, and not on a sill under a window you leave open in wet weather. This lamp is rated IP20, and paper takes up humidity from the air long before you would notice it — the first sign is usually the panels going slightly soft rather than a visible mark. Dry indoor rooms only.
Why Not Just Use Fabric? Because a fabric drum is the default, and it looks like one. Cloth over a styrene liner is durable, wipeable and completely uniform when lit. Paper is none of those things. It is here for the grain, and that is the whole argument.
Marks That Are Not Faults Faint tonal variation across the paper and slight unevenness in the depth of the black are normal in both processes, and both show up more once the lamp is lit. A torn panel, a dented rim or a scratch through to bright brass is a transit or quality issue — photograph the packaging as well as the lamp and contact us.
Cleaning the Brass A dry microfiber cloth handles fingerprints on the platform and legs. No metal polish, no scouring pad, no abrasive cleaner — the black is a conversion layer on the brass itself, and cutting through it exposes bright metal that cannot be matched back. Let the bulb cool before you touch anything.

Questions, Answered

Platform Table Lamp FAQ

Is the base black, or is it brass? The photos look different.
Both, and it is worth explaining. The base is brass, brushed and then chemically darkened — the black is a conversion of the metal's own surface, not paint over the top, so the brass keeps showing through. On a white studio background it photographs close to black. Under a warm bulb in a real room it warms noticeably toward bronze. Every image on this page is the same lamp. Expect yours to sit somewhere between the two depending on the light you keep in the room.
A paper shade — will it survive normal use?
Yes, with two rules: keep it dry and stay off the flat faces. Watercolor stock is heavy paper and holds its shape without a plastic liner, so it is stiffer than people expect. But any liquid leaves a tidemark that dries darker and does not come out, and a thumb pressed into a panel leaves a crease that shows up clearly once the lamp is lit. Dust it with a lint roller, working straight down each panel, and lift the lamp by the brass platform rather than the shade.
Why paper instead of fabric?
Woven cloth is thread laid in rows, so lit from behind it shows a regular grid. Paper is pressed pulp with no order to it — the fibre wanders, and light passing through picks that up as a soft irregular grain across each flat panel. Fabric is more durable, wipeable and completely uniform when lit. Paper is none of those things. It is here for the grain, and that is the whole argument.
It is only 12.8″ tall — is that enough light?
For a nightstand, a shelf or the corner of a console, yes. For reading in an armchair for an hour, no. This is an accent lamp: it throws a warm pool onto the surface around it and lights the immediate area, and it is enough to move around by at night. If the room has no other source, pair it with a taller lamp or a ceiling fixture. We would rather set that expectation now than have you unbox it and be disappointed.
Should I buy one or two?
At this size, two often works better than one. A single lamp on a long credenza can look stranded, while a pair at either end gives the surface a start and a stop. On nightstands the low height keeps the shade below your eye line when you are sitting up in bed. Lamps are sold individually — order two if you want a pair, and use the same bulb in both, since one 2700K next to one 3000K is a difference you will notice every evening.
Are bulbs included, and which should I use?
No — the lamp takes one E27 bulb, max 40W, and bulbs are not included. LED or filament both fit. Use a warm white around 2700K: that is what our photography uses, and it is what brings the bronze up in the brass and the grain up in the paper. A cool bulb at 4000K or above flattens both at once — the paper reads clinical and the base goes back to looking like plain black metal.
Can it be dimmed?
Not on its own. The lamp has a plain inline switch, not a dimmer. To vary the level, fit a dimmable E27 bulb and add a compatible plug-in dimmer between the plug and the outlet. Check the bulb packaging says dimmable before you buy — a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer will flicker or buzz.
How does it switch on, and does it need wiring?
No wiring at all. It is plug-in with a standard US two-prong plug — fit a bulb, plug it in, done. There is an inline switch on the cord, within reach of the tabletop. Because the platform stands on legs rather than sitting flat, you can run the cord out from underneath toward whichever side the outlet happens to be on. The lamp is rated 110V–240V. More detail in our installation guide.
It stands on four legs — is it stable?
On a flat surface, yes. What it does not tolerate is an uneven one: on a runner, a placemat or a stack of books one leg may lift and the platform will rock. Set it directly on the shelf or tabletop. The footprint is 8.6″ × 5.5″, so allow roughly 10″ × 7″ of clear surface.
How do I clean it, and can I use it in a bathroom?
Dry only, on both parts. Lift dust off the paper with a lint roller or a soft dry brush, working straight down the panels and never across the folded corners; wipe the brass with a dry microfiber cloth. No water, no damp cloths, no cleaners, and no metal polish — polish cuts through the darkened layer and exposes bright brass that cannot be matched back. This lamp is rated IP20, so keep it to dry indoor rooms: not a bathroom, not beside a kettle, not on a sill under a window you leave open in wet weather. Paper takes up humidity from the air long before you would notice a mark. Let the bulb cool before dusting.

You're not just buying a lamp — you're bringing home a piece of art that will light your home for years to come.

The Merrow Platform Series —

Anchoring Quiet Elegance Across Every Space

Every home seeks balance — the subtle interplay between architectural structure and gentle ambient warmth. The Merrow Platform Table Lamp was designed to bring that grounding presence to your living room sideboard, bedside nightstand, or study credenza.

Elevated on a sculptured, dark bronze arch-legged metal platform, its tall tapered shade crafted from premium watercolor paper diffuses a soft, inviting glow without glare. The finely brushed metallic surface catches the ambient light, turning a simple accent lamp into an enduring statement of mid-century sophistication and understated luxury.

Mid-Century Craftsmanship —

Architectural Harmony

The Merrow is forged from solid metal with a brushed antique bronze finish — featuring an arched four-legged platform base, a central square stem, and a tall tapered shade carefully hand-crafted from premium watercolor paper.

Every contour serves an intentional purpose. The elevated platform base lifts the silhouette to create light, open space beneath; the fibrous watercolor paper diffuses a soft, golden glow that softens bold architectural lines. Form aligns with function.

Of Bronze, Paper, and Quiet Confidence — this is mid-century design at its most authentic: clean geometric frames, visible material textures, and a silhouette that endures because it was never trying to impress. Only to work beautifully.

These charges are the buyer’s responsibility, and we are not liable for any delays caused by customs authorities in your country.

For more details regarding applicable fees, we recommend contacting your local customs office.

Many of our fixtures are compatible with dimmer switches. Please check the product description or contact us to confirm dimming compatibility before purchase.
