The Odo Black Brass Table Lamp is built from two plain volumes — a weighted cylinder base and a white paper drum shade on a slim stem. The brass is chemically darkened rather than painted, so the finish keeps a soft graphite depth instead of sitting flat, and it wears better: painted steel chips at the rim and seam, while a blackened surface ages into the metal rather than peeling off it.

The paper drum shade does the rest. Paper scatters light more evenly than glass or metal — wide, diffuse, no bright filament visible from bed. Where to Set It A nightstand, a side table beside the sofa, or an entryway console. Allow a clear 10″ × 10″ of surface and set it back an inch or two from the front edge so nothing catches the shade in passing.
One Lamp or Two A pair either side of a bed balances the wall and lets each person read alone. On a long console, a single lamp set off-centre does more for the wall than one placed dead middle.

Lit — 2700K Warm White

The paper turns a low amber and the whole drum becomes the source — no bright filament, no hard edge on the wall. The open top adds an upward wash, so one lamp lifts the corner instead of punching a spotlight into it.
What Changes Paper is translucent, so lighting it doesn't just make it brighter — it changes what the shade is. Off, it's a surface. On, it's the light itself, glowing evenly across the whole drum rather than throwing a beam.
The Bulb Decides The glow above comes from a 2700K warm white bulb. Fit a 4000K or 5000K bulb instead and the same paper reads flat and clinical — closer to an office than a bedroom. One E27, max 40W; a 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens, which is right for reading in bed.
Dimming Dimming depends entirely on the bulb. Fit a dimmable E27 and a compatible plug-in dimmer, and the paper drops to a low ember for late evening. A standard non-dimmable LED will flicker or refuse to dim — check the bulb packaging before you buy.

Both Ends of the Sofa

Why Two Reads Better A single table lamp puts one bright point in a room and leaves the rest to fall away. Two lamps at the same height, on the same wall, flatten that contrast — the room reads as evenly lit rather than as one lit spot in the dark.
Match the Bulbs Use the same bulb in both — same colour temperature, same wattage, ideally the same brand. Two paper shades lit at 2700K and 3000K side by side will read as one warm lamp and one slightly wrong one, and it's hard to un-see.
Spacing Set both back an inch or two from the front edge of the table, at the same distance from the wall. Symmetry is the whole point of a pair, and the eye catches a two-inch difference across a bed faster than you'd expect.

Before you order two: check that both tables are the same height. A pair of identical lamps on tables that differ by even a few inches loses the symmetry entirely — at that point one lamp placed off-centre often looks better than two placed unevenly.

Up close you can see the grain of the paper carrying the light rather than blocking it. Every part of the drum glows at roughly the same brightness — no hot spot behind the bulb, no dark band at the seam. That evenness is the whole reason to wrap a shade in paper instead of glass.

Brass, Down to the Floor Line

The cylinder runs clean to the bottom edge, with the cord leaving through a finished outlet rather than a punched hole. It's the part nobody photographs and everybody sees — a raw edge here is what makes a lamp feel cheap on a nightstand.

Both materials on this lamp are easy to keep and easy to ruin. The mistakes take seconds and can't be undone, so they're worth two minutes of reading.

 

The Blackened Brass Base

A dry or barely damp soft cloth, wiped along the curve of the cylinder. Fingerprints lift straight off a darkened finish; there is nothing to polish and nothing that needs it.

Never

Metal polish, brass cleaner, vinegar, or any abrasive pad. A darkened surface is a chemical layer in the metal, not a coating over it — strip it and you expose raw brass underneath, which cannot be matched or touched up afterward.
 

The Watercolor Paper Shade

A dry, soft brush or a lint roller, worked down the drum rather than around it. Going across the seam catches the edge; going down it does not. A hairdryer on cool, held back a foot, clears dust from the inside.

Never

Water, a damp cloth, or any spray cleaner. Paper stains permanently and the mark shows twice as strongly once the lamp is lit — a small damp patch becomes a dark shadow across the whole panel.
Before You Dust Switch the lamp off and let the bulb cool. Even a low-wattage LED holds heat at the base for a few minutes, and a hot bulb is the one that cracks when a cloth touches it.
Where Not to Put It Not a bathroom, not a kitchen counter near the sink, and not directly under an open window in damp weather. IP20 means indoor dry locations only — and paper absorbs humidity long before anything looks wrong.
Changing the Bulb Lift the shade off rather than reaching through it — the rigid frame will hold a dent if you push against the paper from inside. Unplug first, fit one E27 bulb up to 40W, then set the shade back on the stem.

Will the paper yellow? Not under LED. Yellowing comes from heat, and an LED at 5–8W runs cool enough that the shade stays the colour it arrived. A 40W incandescent bulb run for hours every night is a different story — if you prefer the look of a filament bulb, choose an LED filament instead.

Cool white at 4000K or above makes the same shade read flat and clinical. A 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens, which is right for reading in bed.
Can it be dimmed?
Yes, if you fit a dimmable bulb. The lamp uses a standard socket with no built-in driver, so dimming depends entirely on the bulb and a compatible plug-in dimmer. Check the packaging says dimmable before you buy — a standard non-dimmable LED will flicker or refuse to dim.
Will it fit a small nightstand?
Yes. The lamp is 9.8″ at its widest and 19.7″ tall, so it needs roughly a ten-inch square of surface — it works on nightstands from about 14″ deep upward and still leaves room for a book and a glass. Tables between 24″ and 28″ high put the bottom of the shade just above shoulder height when you are seated, which is where the light lands on a page rather than in your eyes.
How bright is it, really?
Bright enough to read by at arm's length, soft enough to leave on beside someone sleeping. With a 5–8W LED at around 450–600 lumens you get a warm pool over a nightstand plus an upward wash from the open top, which is what stops one lamp reading as a spotlight in a dark room. For ambient light only, drop to about 450 lumens.
How does it switch on, and does it need wiring?
It is plug-in with a standard US two-prong plug — no wiring needed. Fit a bulb, plug it in and it is ready. There is a convenient inline switch on the cord, within reach from the bed, so nobody has to get up or reach above the shade in the dark.
Will the paper shade yellow or sag over time?
