Description

The Orsan Alabaster Disc Table Lamp balances a thick disc of natural alabaster on a single bend of polished chrome, cantilevered out over a matte black base. The stone sits low and wide rather than upright, so the lamp reads as an object resting on the table instead of a fixture standing on it.

It belongs on a console, a nightstand, a bedside shelf, or a desk corner where a conventional shade would feel too tall. Light does not bounce off this shade — it travels through the stone, so the veining lights up from within and the surface below gets a warm, low pool rather than a hard circle. The chrome arm rises from a slot cut through the black disc, which puts the weight off to one side of the stone and lets the whole thing hover. Because alabaster is quarried and cut rather than molded, the pattern running through the disc belongs to that piece alone.

Why This One

A Stone Disc, Carried to One Side

01

Wide and Low, Not Tall

The stone is cut as a squat cylinder with a flat top and a gently tapered wall — broader than it is deep. It stays under the sightline on a console, so nothing gets blocked: not the mirror behind it, not the view across the room.

02

One Bar, Bent Once, Off to the Side

A flat chrome bar passes up through a slot cut across the black base, turns a single corner, and carries the stone out beyond its own footing. No column under the shade, no visible fixing — the counterweight doing the work sits where you would not think to look for it.

03

Three Sources Under One Stone

A single bulb under a disc this wide would leave a bright centre and dark edges. Three G9 sources spread on a chrome spider spaced across the underside instead, so the stone lights up corner to corner and the veining reads evenly all the way to the rim.

04

Veining From One Block Only

Alabaster is quarried and cut, never poured into a mold. Cloudy grey and cream drift across your disc in a pattern no other piece repeats — and most of it stays hidden until the lamp is switched on.

Cut from natural alabaster on a polished chrome arm — veining differs from piece to piece

Natural Stone Variation
Alabaster patterns vary from piece to piece — the stone you receive will differ from the one pictured. Each piece with natural textures is unique.

Caring for natural stone: dust with a dry, soft cloth only, and lift the lamp by the base rather than the stone. Never use water, a damp cloth, glass cleaner, vinegar or anything abrasive — alabaster is porous and softer than glass, so liquids soak in and marks do not come back out. Keep it to dry indoor rooms, away from bathrooms and open windows in damp weather, and let the bulbs cool before dusting.

Find Your Fit

Wider Than It Is Tall

Most table lamps take their space vertically and block whatever is behind them. This one spreads sideways instead and stays below the sightline.

D 13.8″  ×  H 11.4″
One size · low profile, cantilevered to one side

11.4″

overall height

Low enough to sit under a wall-mounted mirror or a picture without crowding it, and low enough on a nightstand that the glow stays below your eye line in bed.

13.8″

widest point

Measured across the stone, which reaches out past the base. Leave about 16″ of clear width so the disc is not overhanging the edge of a narrow console.

1.2×

wider than tall

That ratio is what makes it read as an object rather than a fixture. A conventional lamp of this width would stand around 24″ and dominate the surface.

Orsan Alabaster Disc Table Lamp dimension diagram — 13.8 inch stone diameter and 11.4 inch height | HoaiLamp
Where to Set It A console, a nightstand, a bedside shelf or a desk corner. Allow roughly 16″ × 14″ of clear surface, and set it back from the front edge — the stone reaches further than the base it stands on.
Which Way to Turn It The arm carries the stone out to one side, so the lamp has a front and a back. Point the overhang toward the room and the base disappears behind it; point it at the wall and you see the chrome bend instead. Both work — turn it before you decide.
Setup Plug-in with a standard US two-prong plug — no wiring needed. Fit three G9 bulbs, max 5W each; the inline switch sits on the cord within reach of the tabletop. Bulbs sold separately, and a warm white around 2700K is what brings out the veining. Full details in our installation guide.

One thing to check: because the stone hangs out past its own base, the lamp has a definite tipping direction — always lift it by the black base, never by the disc. Set it on a level surface rather than a runner or a stack of books, and keep the overhang clear of the table edge where a sleeve could catch it.

Off and On

The Stone Keeps Half of Itself Hidden

Unlit, alabaster is a quiet pale grey and gives away almost nothing. Everything that makes it worth cutting from stone rather than moulding from resin only shows up once the light is behind it.

Unlit

A Pale Weight on the Table

Switched off, the disc reads as a solid, matte, faintly cool white, and what you notice is the shape: a heavy stone held out over nothing by a single chrome bend. The veining is there, but barely — a few soft shadows near the rim.

Orsan Alabaster Disc Table Lamp illuminated — warm glow through natural alabaster showing grey and cream veining, wooden table against a grey wall | HoaiLamp

Lit

Grain Rising Through the Stone

Light travels through the material instead of off it, so the cloudy bands inside the block surface all at once and the whole disc turns honey-toned. Thin passages run bright, dense ones hold back — a pattern that belongs to your piece and no other.

How Far the Light Reaches Three G9 sources spread under a 13.8″ disc give a broad, soft wash rather than a reading beam. It lights the console and the wall behind it, and turns a corner of the room warm — keep a task light nearby if you read there.
Choosing the Bulbs Three G9, max 5W each, bulbs sold separately. Colour matters more here than on a fabric shade: 2700K warm white is what turns the stone gold, and it is what our photography uses. At 4000K or above, alabaster goes flat and grey and loses the effect entirely — we wrote up why alabaster looks grey instead of gold if you want the full explanation.
Why Yours Will Differ The disc in these photographs was cut from one block; yours comes from another. Expect the same pale ground and the same warm glow, but the bands, clouds and darker flecks will fall differently. That is what a quarried material does and what a moulded shade cannot.

Photographed with warm white bulbs — tone and brightness will shift with the bulbs you fit

The Story

Moving the Stem Off Center

Orsan Alabaster Disc Table Lamp in a city-view reading nook beside an armchair, alabaster disc glowing on a chrome cantilever arm | HoaiLamp

A lamp stem has to go somewhere. Almost every designer puts it in the middle.

Run the stem up through the center and the shade sits squarely on top of it: balanced, predictable, and the same profile every other table lamp in the category already has. We started this one by moving that support out to the edge instead, and letting the disc carry on past it.

That one shift changes the whole object. A flat bar rises through a slot in the base, turns a single corner, and meets the stone near its rim rather than under its middle, so most of the disc reaches out over nothing. The black plate the arm passes through is what balances the load — the load-bearing part of the design is the part you stop noticing first. And because the stone now sits low and wide instead of high and narrow, it stops competing for the vertical space a mirror or a picture already occupies.

Design Note

The Slot Is Structural

The arm passes through the base rather than sitting on it, which is what lets the plate act as a counterweight instead of just a foot.

Design Note

Cut Thick, Not Thin

A thinner disc would glow brighter but wash the grain out. The wall is left deep enough that the light has to travel through the stone and pick up its pattern on the way.

Design Note

Black Under Pale

A matte black plate under a pale stone and a mirror arm keeps the piece anchored. Without that dark note at the bottom, the whole thing would read as if it were floating away.

Each disc is cut from natural alabaster — the grain belongs to one block and repeats on no other piece

About the Stone

Yours Will Not Match the Photographs

Not exactly, anyway — and that is worth explaining properly rather than burying in a footnote, because it is the reason to choose stone over a moulded shade in the first place.

Alabaster forms in beds over a long stretch of time, and every layer traps something slightly different — more iron here, more clay there, a denser band where the water ran slower. When a block is quarried and sliced, that history gets cut across at whatever angle the saw happens to take. The disc in our photographs came from one block. Yours came from another, and possibly from a different depth of the same seam.

A moulded resin shade repeats one pattern on every unit forever. That is the trade: consistency, or a material that was doing something for several thousand years before anyone cut a lamp out of it.

What Stays the Same

The Things You Are Buying For

●  The pale, cool white ground colour unlit

●  The warm honey tone once the bulbs are on

●  Cut dimensions, wall thickness and overall brightness

●  The polished surface and the way light diffuses through it

What Will Differ

The Things Only Yours Has

●  Where the cloudy bands sit and which way they run

●  The number and size of darker grey flecks

●  Slight shifts toward cream or grey across the face

●  Which passages run bright when lit and which hold back

Marks That Are Not Faults Fine surface lines, small translucent spots and faint colour banding are part of the material and appear in every piece of natural alabaster. They become more visible when the lamp is lit, which is when most people notice them for the first time.
What Is a Fault Chips to the rim, a crack running through the body, or a piece that arrives in more than one part. Those are transit or quality issues, not variation — photograph the packaging as well as the lamp and contact us.
Ordering More Than One Two lamps ordered together will not be a matched pair. If you want them as close as possible — either side of a bed, for instance — tell us at checkout and we will cut both from the same block where stock allows.

Quarried, cut and polished — one block, one disc, no repeats

Questions, Answered

Alabaster Disc Lamp FAQ

Is the stone real alabaster, or resin made to look like it?
Natural alabaster, quarried and cut from solid stone, then polished. The give-away is that the pattern differs on every single disc — a moulded shade repeats one pattern on every unit it ever produces, because it comes out of the same tool. Stone cannot do that. It is also why the disc has real weight to it and why it warms slowly rather than instantly under the bulbs.
Will mine look like the one in the photographs?
Close, but not identical, and we would rather say so up front. What stays the same: the pale ground colour, the honey tone when lit, the dimensions and the brightness. What differs: where the cloudy bands sit, how many darker flecks there are, and which passages run bright when the light is behind them. Ours came from one block and yours came from another. If that matters to you, this is the wrong material — and if it appeals to you, it is the whole reason to buy stone.
How is the stone held up? It looks like it should tip over.
A flat chrome bar passes up through a slot cut across the black base and turns one corner to carry the disc out to the side. The plate is the counterweight, not just a foot — that is what balances the overhang. It is stable in normal use, but the lamp does have a tipping direction, so always lift it by the black base, never by the stone, and set it on a level surface rather than a runner or a stack of books.
Are bulbs included, and which ones should I buy?
No — the lamp takes three G9 bulbs, max 5W each, and bulbs are not included. G9 is a small two-pin base, not a screw fitting, so check the packaging says G9 before you order. Colour matters more here than on a fabric shade: use warm white around 2700K, which is what our photography uses. At 4000K or above the stone goes flat and grey and you lose the effect entirely — we explain why alabaster looks grey instead of gold in more detail.
Why three bulbs instead of one?
Because the disc is 13.8″ across. A single source under a shade that wide would leave a bright spot in the middle and dark edges, and the veining near the rim would never light up. Three G9 sources spread on a chrome bracket spread the load across the underside, so the stone reads evenly from centre to edge.
Can it be dimmed?
Not on its own. The lamp has a plain inline switch, not a dimmer. To vary the level, fit dimmable G9 bulbs and add a compatible plug-in dimmer between the plug and the outlet. Check the bulb packaging says dimmable before you buy — a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer will flicker or buzz. Alabaster at a low setting is where the material is at its best, so it is worth the extra step.
How does it switch on, and does it need wiring?
No wiring at all. It is plug-in with a standard US two-prong plug — fit the bulbs, plug it in, done. There is an inline switch on the cord, within reach of the tabletop. The lamp is rated 110V–240V, so it will work on either standard.
How big is it, and where does it fit?
13.8″ across × 11.4″ tall — wider than it is tall, which is unusual for a table lamp. It stays below the sightline, so it will sit under a wall mirror or a picture without crowding it. Allow roughly 16″ × 14″ of clear surface and set it back from the front edge, because the stone reaches out past the base it stands on.
How do I clean it, and can I use it in a bathroom?
Dry, soft cloth only. Alabaster is porous and softer than glass — a fingernail can mark it — so avoid damp cloths, glass cleaner, vinegar and anything abrasive. Liquids soak in and the marks do not come back out. For the same reason keep it to dry indoor rooms: this lamp is rated IP20, and bathroom steam will stain the stone permanently. Let the bulbs cool before dusting, and lift by the base.
