Ovo is a sculptural table lamp built around an opening rather than a column. A single brass ring rises from a flat square plate, curves up and closes at the top where the stem carries the shade — and what sits in the middle is nothing at all. The wall behind shows through it, which is why this lamp does not block a console the way a solid base does. The solid brass body is finished in high-gloss black: a mirror surface that picks up a highlight along the whole inside curve and turns the ring into a drawn line rather than a mass.

Above it, a paper drum shade in warm off-white, slightly tapered. Paper scatters light more evenly than glass or metal, so the whole drum glows at one brightness with no filament showing — a soft counterweight to the hard shine below. Open at the top, it washes the wall as well as the surface. Black and warm white read cleanly in modern, art deco, Japandi and contemporary glam rooms. Caring for a high-gloss finish: use a clean, dry microfibre cloth only — a mirror surface shows fingerprints and dust more readily than a matte one, and paper towel, kitchen cloth or anything with grit in it will leave fine scratches that catch the light. Sizing to the Surface A table lamp should be no more than about two-thirds the width of what it stands on. Going wider than the surface is what makes a lamp look borrowed from another room.
Turning the Ring The body is an open oval, so it reads differently depending on where you stand. Face the opening into the room and the wall shows through it; turn it side-on and the ring narrows to a line. Set the cord exit toward the wall either way.

One thing to check: the base is a flat plate sitting flush to the tabletop, so it wants a level surface — on a runner or a folded cloth, make sure the whole plate is bearing before you let go. And handle the lamp by the base rather than the ring: a polished surface takes fingerprints the moment you touch it.

The Finish

What a Mirror Surface Gives You — and Asks For

High gloss on solid brass is a deliberate choice, not a default. It does something matte black cannot — and it needs a little more from you in return.

A single white highlight runs along the polished curve where the ring closes into the stem.

The highlight follows the curve — it is what turns the ring into a drawn line.

What It Gives You

A continuous highlight. A polished surface catches one unbroken bright line along the inside of the curve. Matte black absorbs that light instead, which is why a matte version of this shape would read as a heavy black mass rather than a drawn outline.

A shape that moves. Because the highlight is a reflection, it shifts as you cross the room. The ring looks different from the doorway than it does from the sofa — a matte lamp looks the same from everywhere.

Depth against the shade. The hard shine below and the soft matte paper above are what make the two halves read as separate materials rather than one object in two colours.

What It Asks For

It shows fingerprints. Every gloss surface does, and a black one shows them most. Expect to see marks after handling, and expect them to wipe off in seconds with a dry microfibre cloth. Handle the lamp by the base plate rather than the ring and you will rarely need to.

It scratches finer than matte. A mirror finish has nothing to hide a scratch in. Paper towel, a kitchen cloth, or anything with grit in it will leave fine swirl marks that catch the light — microfibre only, and wipe in one direction rather than circles.

It reflects the room. Set it opposite a bright window and the ring will pick up that window. Usually this is a feature; if you want the shape to read as pure black, put it against a wall rather than facing glass.

The Only Cloth You Need A clean, dry microfibre cloth — the kind sold for eyeglasses or car paint. Keep one in the drawer of whatever the lamp stands on and the whole job takes ten seconds. If a mark will not lift dry, breathe on it and wipe again; do not reach for a cleaner.
Never Use Paper towel, kitchen roll, tissue, a dish cloth, or any spray polish. All of them either carry grit or leave a film that dulls the reflection. Abrasive pads and solvent cleaners are the mistake to avoid — fine swirl marks on a mirror surface are not something you can buff out at home.
Out of the Box The lamp arrives handled, so a wipe on arrival is normal — not a defect. Fit the bulb and set the shade first, then give the ring one pass with a dry cloth before you step back to look at it.

Worth knowing before you buy: if the lamp is going somewhere it will be moved often — a shared desk, a hallway table people brush past, a room with small children — a gloss finish will ask more of you than a matte one. Somewhere it mostly stands still, a console or a bedside, it stays looking new with almost no effort.

Off & On

The Ring Leads, Then the Shade Does

Unlit, the polished ring is the brightest thing on the table. Lit, it drops to a silhouette and the paper takes over — the two halves trade places.

Unlit — Daytime

Unlit against a concrete wall, the polished ring reflects the light in the room around it.

This is when the ring does the work. Daylight lands on the polished curve and returns a single bright line, so the black reads as a drawn outline rather than a solid mass — and the opening lets the wall carry straight through the lamp. Switched off, Ovo is closer to a small sculpture than a light fixture.

Lit — 2700K Warm White

With the bulb on, the paper drum glows amber and the black ring falls into shadow beneath it.

The paper turns amber and becomes the brightest thing in the frame, so the ring beneath it recedes into a dark shape holding it up. The open top washes the wall behind at the same time. What was a reflective object by day becomes a warm panel of light at night, standing on a silhouette.

What Changes A gloss finish only shows itself when light falls on it. Once the lamp is the light source, the ring has nothing left to reflect and reads as pure black instead. That is why this lamp is worth placing where you will see it by day as well as by night — you are buying two different objects.
The Bulb Decides The glow above comes from a 2700K warm white bulb. Fit a 4000K or 5000K bulb instead and the paper reads flat and clinical, and the warm-against-black contrast that carries this lamp disappears. One E27, max 40W; a 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens. Bulbs sold separately.
Dimming Dimming depends entirely on the bulb. Fit a dimmable E27 and a compatible plug-in dimmer, and the paper drops to a low ember while the ring picks its highlight back up — at a low level you get both halves at once. A standard non-dimmable LED will flicker or refuse to dim.

Three Surfaces Worth the Space

An open base takes less visual room than a solid one. These are the three places that difference actually shows.

This is where the open ring earns its keep. A console is usually narrow and always against a wall, so a solid lamp base blocks whatever hangs above it. Ovo lets the mirror — and the reflection in it — carry straight through. The large is the size for this: at 28.4″ it holds its own beneath artwork rather than disappearing under it.

02 — Bedroom

Why Two Reads Better

The opening becomes a rhythm. One open ring is a detail. Two, spaced either side of a headboard, turn into a pattern the eye follows across the wall — which is what a matched pair is for.

Even light, no bright spot. A single lamp puts one warm point in a dark room and leaves the rest to fall away. Two at the same height flatten that contrast, so the bedroom reads as evenly lit rather than as one lit corner.

Each side gets a switch. The switch sits on the cord within reach from the mattress, so one person can read while the other sleeps — and neither has to cross the room to turn it off.

Getting a Pair Right

Choose the small size. At 20.7″ it sits at nightstand scale on a table 24–28″ high. The large is a console piece — two of those beside a bed will overwhelm the headboard rather than frame it.

Use the same bulb in both. Same colour temperature, same wattage, ideally the same brand. Two paper shades lit at 2700K and 3000K side by side read as one warm lamp and one slightly wrong one, and it is hard to un-see.

Face the openings the same way. Turn both rings to the same angle — either square to the wall or both angled into the room. Mirroring them looks accidental; matching them looks intended.

Before you order two: check that both nightstands are the same height. A pair of identical lamps on tables that differ by even a few inches loses the symmetry entirely — at that point a single lamp placed off-centre often looks better than two placed unevenly.
