Description

The Selene Alabaster Disc Chandelier reduces a stone light to its simplest possible element and then repeats it. Each unit is a disc of natural alabaster held at one point by a brass clasp, with nothing behind it and nothing around it. The source sits inside the rim rather than behind the face — so what you see is a bright ring around the edge and a soft field of stone in the middle, with the veining showing through wherever the alabaster runs thin. Every disc is cut from a single block, so no two are alike: the pattern, the depth of the amber and the way light moves through it are decided by the stone.

Order it as one disc or as many as eighteen, hung at staggered heights from a single round canopy. One reads as a quiet point of light over a bedside or a corner; three or five fill a dining table; twelve and above become a vertical composition built for a stairwell or a double-height void — the same element, scaled to the room rather than a different fixture for each. The clasp is the only hardware you see: a folded brass strap wraps the top edge and pins the stone through a single point, so each disc hangs free and turns to face the room however it settles. A natural stone chandelier for a stairwell, a dining table, an entryway, or anywhere the ceiling is worth using.

Natural Stone Variation
Alabaster patterns vary from piece to piece — the stone you receive will differ from the one pictured. Each piece with natural textures is unique.

About the integrated LED: the light source is built into each disc rather than fitted as a bulb, which is what allows the rim to glow evenly with no socket showing. There is nothing to buy and nothing to change, and a module of this type is rated for tens of thousands of hours — well past a decade of normal evening use. It is covered by the 2-year warranty, with transit damage and any fault on our side put right at no cost to you. Beyond that, replacement discs are available at cost — so a fixture like this never becomes unrepairable.

Find Your Fit

Eight Configurations, Three Disc Sizes

Multi-light sets are not the same disc repeated — they mix large, medium and small stones. That mix is what gives a cluster depth instead of turning it into a grid.

11.8″

large disc

The anchor of any cluster, and the size to choose if you are buying a single. Big enough to read as a stone object rather than a light fitting.

9.8″

medium disc

The middle register. In a cluster these sit between the large and small stones and keep the eye moving down rather than stopping at one size.

7.9″

small disc

The smallest register, and always the most numerous in a large set. These are what fill the space between the bigger stones without crowding it.

Matching a Set to a Ceiling

Overall drop is the maximum — cords trim shorter on site

15 & 18 lights

Which Size to Order Choose by ceiling height first, then by room. 1–3 lights suit a standard 8–9 ft ceiling over a table or a bedside. 5–9 lights want 10–14 ft — a foyer or the turn of a stairwell. 12–18 lights are built for a double-height void at 16 ft and above, where the 16 to 20 ft drop has somewhere to go.
Drop Is a Maximum, Not a Fixed Length Each disc hangs on its own 59″ (150 cm) cord, and the figures above are the full extent of the cascade. Cords are trimmed at installation to set the stagger, so a set always fits a shorter ceiling than its maximum — but it cannot be made longer than listed. For a deeper drop, ask us before ordering and we will supply extended cords.
Installation & Ceiling Support Hardwired to a single junction box — even an 18-light set runs from one canopy, so only one electrical point is needed. But the larger configurations carry real weight in stone, and a standard box is not rated to hold it: from 7 lights upward, have your electrician confirm the ceiling structure and fit blocking or a rated mounting point. In a stairwell, agree access before the fixture arrives — a 16 to 20 ft drop is not something to hang from a ladder.

Before you choose a size: measure the ceiling height and decide where you want the lowest disc to sit — in a stairwell, that usually means clear of the highest step by at least 7 ft. Everything above it is composition. If you are between two configurations, the larger set trimmed shorter reads better than a smaller set stretched to fill the space.

On the larger sets: alabaster is stone, and a cluster of twelve or eighteen discs is a substantial load hanging from one point. The ceiling has to be prepared for it before installation day — that means blocking between joists or a rated mounting point, not a standard junction box on its own. Send us your configuration and your electrician can confirm the requirement in advance rather than discovering it with the fixture already unpacked.

Selecting Your Stone

We Can Steer the Stone. We Cannot Copy It.

Alabaster is quarried, not manufactured. The seams in a disc were set down long before anyone cut it, so the piece that reaches you will differ from every photograph on this page — and from every other disc in your own set.

That is not a limitation we work around. It is the reason to use stone at all.

Tell Us a Direction

•  Paler and more even
•  Stronger grey movement
•  Warmer, amber-toned
•  Matched as closely as possible across a set

Any of these we can work toward. A specific pattern from a photograph we cannot.

Six workshop views show alabaster cut into discs, slabs, rings, cones, bowls and spheres, each with different veining.

Stone in our workshop, cut for several different pieces — shown for the range of the material, not the shape of this fixture.

Selection happens when the discs are cut, so it has to be arranged with the order. We can also photograph the actual stones before they ship.

Care

Dust It. That Is Almost the Whole Job.

There are no bulbs to change and no glass to wash. Alabaster is a soft stone, and the only real rule is to keep liquid away from it.

The Stone A dry, soft cloth or a feather duster, working across the face rather than round the rim. Never water, never a damp cloth, and never any cleaner. Alabaster is a soft stone that absorbs liquid and etches on contact with anything acidic — a mark left by a household spray does not come out. Support each disc from below rather than pushing it sideways on its clasp.
The Brass The same dry cloth. Solid brass deepens gradually with age and that is intended — no polish, which would strip the finish back to raw metal and leave the clasps brighter than the canopy. If you prefer to keep it as it arrived, a wipe every few months is enough to slow the change.
The LED Built into each disc, so there is nothing to buy and nothing to change — and nothing you should try to open. A module of this type is rated for tens of thousands of hours, well past a decade of normal evening use. Covered by the 2-year warranty; beyond it, replacement discs are available at cost. Either way, write to us rather than taking a disc apart.
Reaching It Switch the power off at the wall first. On a three or five-light set over a table, a step ladder is enough. On the larger cascades it is not. A twelve or eighteen-light set hanging into a stairwell needs proper access equipment — and a disc dropped from that height will not survive the floor. Once or twice a year is plenty; this is not a fixture that collects dust quickly.

What ageing looks like: the brass will darken slightly where it is handled, and that is the material behaving as it should. The stone will not change. Alabaster has been used in lighting for centuries precisely because it holds its colour and its translucency — kept dry and out of direct sun, a disc looks the same in twenty years as it does on installation day.

Choose a Size

Three Discs or Eighteen

The numbers in the specification table are hard to picture. Tap through the configurations and see the difference in scale for yourself.

Three discs hang close together at three different heights.

3

discs · one of each size

Over a Table, Under a Normal Ceiling

The smallest arrangement that still reads as a composition rather than a single light. One large, one medium, one small, close enough together to be seen as one object. This is the configuration for a standard 8–9 ft ceiling — a dining table, a breakfast nook, a bedside on a longer cord.

Canopy ⌀ 11.8″
Maximum drop 78.7″ (200 cm)
Suits a ceiling of 8–9 ft
Five discs stagger down in a loose spiral from one canopy.

5

discs · 1 large, 2 medium, 2 small

Enough to Fill a Dining Table

Two more stones than the three-light, and the difference is width rather than height — the cluster spreads across a table instead of hanging over the centre of it. Still fits a standard ceiling, but wants a room with a little more air around it than a breakfast nook.

Canopy ⌀ 13.8″
Maximum drop 78.7″ (200 cm)
Suits a ceiling of 9–10 ft
Seven discs fall through a taller spiral with clear space between them.

7

discs · 1 large, 3 medium, 3 small

Where the Drop Starts to Matter

The first configuration built to fall rather than to hover. At nearly ten feet of maximum drop it needs height to work — an entrance hall, the turn of a stairwell, or a room with a raised ceiling. Below 10 ft you would be trimming most of the cascade away.

Canopy ⌀ 15.7″
Maximum drop 118.1″ (300 cm)
Suits a ceiling of 10–12 ft
Nine discs spiral down with two large stones anchoring the composition.

9

discs · 2 large, 3 medium, 4 small

The Size Most Rooms Land On

The first set with two large discs rather than one, which is what gives the cascade a top and a bottom instead of a single focal point. Substantial enough to hold a two-story foyer, restrained enough not to overwhelm a 12 ft room. If you are unsure between sizes, this is usually the answer.

Canopy ⌀ 19.7″
Maximum drop 118.1″ (300 cm)
Suits a ceiling of 11–14 ft
Twelve discs drop through a long spiral over sixteen feet.

12

discs · 3 large, 4 medium, 5 small

Built for a Double-Height Void

At over sixteen feet of maximum drop this is no longer a ceiling light — it is a vertical element that occupies a whole storey. Three large discs spread down the length of it rather than clustering at the top, so the composition holds together when seen from the floor below or from a landing halfway up.

Canopy ⌀ 23.6″
Maximum drop 196.9″ (500 cm)
Suits a ceiling of 16–18 ft
Fifteen discs fall in a dense spiral from a wide canopy.

15

discs · 4 large, 5 medium, 6 small

Density as Well as Height

The same drop as the twelve-light but with three more stones in it, so the cascade reads as denser rather than taller. Choose this over the twelve when the void is wide as well as tall — an open stairwell rather than a narrow shaft, where a thinner column would look lost.

Canopy ⌀ 31.5″
Maximum drop 196.9″ (500 cm)
Suits a ceiling of 16–18 ft
Eighteen discs run the full height of a two-storey space in a single column.

18

discs · 5 large, 6 medium, 7 small

The Full Height of the House

Nearly twenty feet from the canopy to the lowest stone. This is a commissioned-scale fixture for a stairwell that runs three floors or an atrium that has nothing else in it — and it needs the ceiling structure prepared before installation day, not a standard junction box.

Canopy ⌀ 35.4″
Maximum drop 236.2″ (600 cm)
Suits a ceiling of 20 ft and above

Between two sizes? Take the larger one and trim the cords shorter. A bigger set brought up reads better than a smaller set stretched to fill a space it was never sized for — and the trimming happens on site anyway.

Made to Your Ceiling

Two Things to Settle Before You Order

Both are built into the fixture rather than adapted afterwards — so if either applies to you, send us a line first.

01  Sloped Ceilings

An adapted canopy sits flush against a sloped ceiling with the cords still hanging plumb.

A Vaulted Ceiling Is Not a Problem

A standard canopy gaps at one edge and leaves the whole cascade hanging at an angle. We build the canopy to your pitch instead, so it sits flush and the discs fall true.

If you don't: every cord leans the same few degrees and the composition reads as tilted rather than falling. On a twelve or eighteen-light set it is impossible to miss.

02  Cord Length

Three discs hang at three different heights, each cord trimmed to its own length.

Set the Drop on Installation Day

The stagger above is not fixed at the factory — every disc ships on a 59″ (150 cm) cord and each one is trimmed individually on site, so your electrician sets the composition to suit the room. Cords shorten easily. They cannot be lengthened.

If you don't: on a tall void the cascade stops short of where you wanted it — the lowest disc hangs higher than planned, the composition loses its reach, and there is no way to correct it once the set has shipped.

Questions, Answered

Alabaster Chandelier FAQ

The LED is built in — what happens when it fails?
The light source sits inside each disc rather than in a socket, which is what lets the rim glow evenly with no fitting showing. There is nothing to buy and nothing to change, and a module of this type is rated for tens of thousands of hours — well past a decade of normal evening use.

If something goes wrong we cover it. Transit damage and any fault on our side are put right at no cost to you — tell us within the warranty period and we replace the disc. Outside that, replacements are available at cost, covering the disc and shipping: accidental breakage, a disc dropped during cleaning, or a module that finally reaches the end of its life years from now. Either way you are never left with a fixture that cannot be repaired.
How many lights should I order?
Choose by ceiling height first. 1–3 lights for a standard 8–9 ft ceiling over a table or a bedside. 5–9 lights for 10–14 ft — a foyer or the turn of a stairwell. 12–18 lights for a double-height void at 16 ft and above. If you are between two sizes, take the larger and trim the cords shorter: a bigger set brought up reads better than a smaller one stretched to fill a space it was not sized for, and the trimming happens on site anyway.
Will the discs match each other?
No, and that is the material. Each disc is cut from a block of natural alabaster, so veining, tone and translucency are decided by the stone rather than by us. In a set of nine or twelve you see that plainly — some stones glow evenly, others carry a dark seam that catches the light. We can select toward heavier veining or toward clear white if you tell us before ordering, but we cannot reproduce a specific pattern from a photograph. Order a set together and we cut it from the same run.
Can the cords be made longer?
Not after they ship. Every disc arrives on a 59″ (150 cm) cord, trimmed individually at installation to set the stagger — so a set always fits a shorter ceiling than its maximum, but never a taller one. For a deeper drop, contact us before ordering and we build the set with extended cords. This is the one thing that cannot be corrected once the fixture is on site.
Will it work on a sloped ceiling?
Yes, but the canopy has to be built for it. A standard canopy gaps at one edge and leaves the whole cascade hanging at an angle — on a twelve or eighteen-light set that is impossible to miss. Tell us the pitch before you order and we make the canopy to match, so it sits flush and the discs fall true. Like the cords, this is arranged when the fixture is built rather than adapted afterwards.
Does the ceiling need reinforcing?
For a single disc or a three-light, a standard junction box is fine. From 7 lights upward the load is substantial — alabaster is stone, and a whole cluster hangs from one point. Have your electrician confirm the ceiling structure and fit blocking or a rated mounting point before the fixture arrives, not on installation day. Every configuration runs from a single canopy, so only one electrical point is needed regardless of size.
Can it be dimmed?
Yes — the integrated LED works with a standard LED wall dimmer, which is not included. Worth wiring one in: at full output the cascade lights a room, and turned low it becomes a set of warm stones with the light seeming to come from inside them rather than through them. The colour temperature is 3000K warm white, which is what keeps alabaster amber rather than grey.
How do I clean it?
A dry, soft cloth or a feather duster on both the stone and the brass. Never water, never a damp cloth, never any cleaner — alabaster is a soft stone that absorbs liquid and etches on contact with anything acidic, and the mark does not come out. No polish on the brass either. Switch the power off at the wall first, support each disc from below rather than pushing it sideways, and on the larger cascades leave it to whoever has proper access equipment. Once or twice a year is plenty.
