Description

The Selvane Alabaster Slab Wall Sconce is built from a single slab of natural alabaster, split and left with its raw quarry edge. Light passes through the stone rather than around it, so this alabaster wall sconce glows in warm honey tones with the veining showing right through the face — closer to candlelight than to a lamp. Off, it reads as stone sculpture on the wall.

Behind the slab, a hand-applied gold leaf backplate and a perforated brass diffuser spread the light evenly and kill the hot spot most backlit fixtures show, while a half-moon gold arc cradles the base like a sculptural bracket. A modern organic wall light for bedside walls, hallways, entryways and bathroom vanities — and because every slab is different, no two pieces are alike.

×2
Buy as a Pair & Save
Sconces almost always go up in twos. Select the option marked (×2) above — a set is priced below two singles, and both are cut from the same glass batch, so the tint matches exactly. Ordering separately risks a visible difference between the two.

Natural Stone Variation
Alabaster patterns vary from piece to piece — the stone you receive will differ from the one pictured. Each piece with natural textures is unique.

Why This One

One Slab, Left Where It Split

01

The Top Edge Was Never Cut

The upper edge is the break line from the block the slab came out of, not a milled profile. Nothing was straightened or polished back, so the outline you receive is the shape the stone took when it split.

02

Light That Comes Through the Stone

The source sits behind the slab rather than in front of it, so everything that reaches the room has already passed through marble. The glow lands warm and honey-toned, deepening where the veining runs thick and lifting where the stone thins.

03

A Brass Screen Behind the Panel

A micro-punched brass diffuser stands between the bulb and the stone, breaking the light apart before it touches the back face. That is what stops a single bright center spot forming, the usual giveaway on a backlit stone fixture.

04

Gold Leaf Laid Over Metal by Hand

The backplate and the half-moon arc under the slab are leafed by hand, so the surface keeps faint tooling marks and shifts tone as you walk past it. Against pale stone it reads as worked brass rather than the flat shine of plating.

Cut from a single block of natural alabaster and framed in hand-applied gold leaf — veining differs from piece to piece

Caring for alabaster and gold leaf: dust the stone and the leafed frame with a dry, soft cloth only, wiping along the slab rather than across the raw top edge. Alabaster is porous and gold leaf is thin, so never use water, glass cleaner or any chemical spray on the fixture — liquid stains the stone and lifts the leafing. Switch the power off at the wall and let the bulb cool completely before cleaning; G9 bulbs run hot and sit close to the panel.

Find Your Fit

Tall on the Wall, Barely Off It

A stone panel reads as a large piece from across the room, yet it stands off the wall by less than the width of your hand.

W 7″  ×  D 5″  ×  H 17.3″
One size · full-height panel on a slim wall projection

17.3″

overall height

Tall enough to hold a wall on its own, so a single piece works beside a door or a mirror without needing a pair to balance it.

5″

off the wall

Shallow enough for a hallway you walk through daily, or the wall beside a bed where a swing-arm lamp would be in the way.

60–66″

center off the floor

The usual mounting band for a hallway or entry. Beside a bed, drop it to around 48″ so the glow sits near shoulder height when you sit up.

Selvane Alabaster Slab Wall Sconce dimension diagram showing a 17.3 inch height, 7 inch width and 5 inch wall projection | HoaiLamp
Where to Hang It Beside a bed, along a hallway, in an entry, or flanking a mirror or fireplace. Leave a clear 10″ of wall on either side so the raw top edge reads as a shape rather than as something crowded.
Hanging a Pair Set centers about 36–42″ apart over a bed or a console, and mount both at the same height. Every slab is cut differently, so the two edges will not mirror each other.
Setup Hardwired to a standard round junction box, with the backplate covering the box. Fit one G9 bulb; bulbs sold separately, and a warm 2700K LED is what the stone was matched to.

One thing to check: a solid stone panel weighs more than a shade of the same size, so the backplate needs to land on the junction box screws rather than on drywall anchors alone. Check where your box actually sits before you commit to a height, and have an electrician set it if it needs moving.

Selecting Your Stone

We Can Steer the Stone. We Cannot Copy It.

Alabaster is quarried, not manufactured. The seams in a cylinder were set down long before anyone cut it, so the piece that reaches you will differ from every photograph on this page — and the two stones on your own sconce will differ from each other.

That is not a limitation we work around. It is the reason to use stone at all.

Tell Us a Direction

•  Paler and more even
•  Stronger grey movement
•  Warmer, amber-toned
•  Matched as closely as possible across a pair

Any of these we can work toward. A specific pattern from a photograph we cannot.

Six workshop views show alabaster cut into slabs, discs, rings and cylinders, each with different veining.

Stone in our workshop, cut for several different pieces — shown for the range of the material, not the shape of this fixture.

Selection happens when the cylinders are cut, so it has to be arranged with the order. Tell us the direction you want and the horsehair colour — we can also photograph the actual stones before they ship.

Where It Goes

Four Walls It Was Made For

A pair of alabaster slab wall sconces glowing on either side of a bed in a calm bedroom.

Bedside

A Pair Above the Nightstands

Mounted around 48″ off the floor, the glow sits near shoulder height when you sit up and leaves the nightstand clear for everything else.

Two stone wall lights flanking a bathroom vanity mirror and washing warm light across the counter.

Vanity

Flanking the Mirror

Light from both sides at face height, so it lands on you rather than casting the shadows an overhead fixture drops under the eyes.

A single gold-leaf and marble sconce lighting an entryway console table and the wall behind it.

Entryway

One Piece Over a Console

Tall enough to hold the wall on its own. Set it off-centre above the console and let the raw top edge break the line of the console’s frame.

Backlit natural stone panels running down a narrow corridor wall at even spacing.

Hallway

Down a Narrow Corridor

Five inches off the wall keeps a walkway clear, and repeating the fixture at even spacing turns a pass-through into a lit sequence.

Every slab is cut from a different block, so the veining in your room will not match the veining in these photographs.

Buying a Pair

Most Walls Want Two

A single sconce lights a spot. Two set an axis, and the wall between them becomes part of the composition. Order the second at the same time and both slabs are cut from stone we can look at side by side.

Two alabaster slab sconces mounted either side of a plaster fireplace and lighting the chimney breast.

Fireplace

Either Side of the Chimney Breast

The pair frames the mantel and gives the wall a light source at night when the fire is out.

Centers 60–72″ apart

A matched pair of stone wall lights glowing above the ends of a living room sofa.

Living Room

Above Each End of the Sofa

Warm light at both ends of the seating instead of one lamp pulling the whole room to one corner.

Centers 66–78″ apart

Backlit marble panels flanking a round entryway mirror above a console.

Entry Mirror

Flanking a Round Mirror

Two tall rectangles hold a round mirror in place and even out the light on your face at the door.

Centers 36–42″ apart

Ordering two: set the quantity to 2 above and note “pair” at checkout. We then cut both slabs from stone selected together, so tone and veining stay in the same family.

Natural stone is never identical — a pair is matched, not mirrored.

Bulb & Colour Temperature

The Bulb Decides What the Stone Looks Like

Light travels through the alabaster, so whatever colour goes in comes back out through the veining. A warm bulb reads as honey and cream. A cool one turns the same slab grey.

The alabaster slab sconce switched on, glowing warm amber against a concrete wall.

Lit

2700K, About 3–4W

This is the fixture as it was designed: a warm amber wash with the veining showing through, bright enough to light a hallway and soft enough to leave on all evening.

The same stone panel switched off, showing its raw split edge and natural grey veining in daylight.

Unlit

Daylight, No Bulb On

Off, it goes back to being a piece of cut stone on the wall — cool white with grey movement and the raw top edge doing the work. It has to look right both ways.

Base One G9 bulb, sold separately. Any standard G9 LED fits.
Colour 2700K warm white. 3000K still works. Anything at 4000K or above drains the warmth out of the stone and makes it look like frosted glass.
Output 3–4W, roughly 300–400 lumens. This is accent light; a brighter bulb starts to show the shape of the source through thinner areas of the slab.
Dimming Comes from the bulb, not the fixture. Fit a dimmable G9 LED and a compatible wall dimmer; a non-dimmable bulb on a dimmer will flicker.
A Pair Use the same bulb in both. Two different colour temperatures side by side are obvious on stone in a way they are not on fabric or glass.

Before you blame the stone: if the light looks grey or clinical, check the bulb first. Most photos of this fixture that look wrong are running a daylight bulb, and swapping to 2700K costs a few dollars.

Care & Cleaning

Dry Cloth, Nothing Else

Alabaster is porous and gold leaf is only microns thick. Almost every problem people have with a fixture like this comes from cleaning it the way they would clean glass.

Do
  • Dust with a dry, soft cloth or a clean makeup brush, wiping along the slab.
  • Support the stone from below with one hand while you clean the frame.
  • Switch the power off at the wall and let the bulb cool first.
  • Work gently around the raw top edge — it is a natural break, and loose grains can lift.
  • Lift a fingerprint on the leafing with a barely damp cloth, then dry it immediately.
Don’t
  • No water, glass cleaner, all-purpose spray, vinegar or alcohol on the stone.
  • Never spray anything at the fixture — liquid runs down and reaches the socket.
  • No polish, wax or metal cleaner on the gold leaf; it strips the leafing.
  • No microfibre scrubbing or abrasive pads on the polished face.
  • Don’t pull or twist the slab to reposition it — adjust from the backplate.
Alabaster Dry dusting only. The stone absorbs liquid, so a water mark can sit in the surface permanently rather than wiping away.
Gold Leaf Dust lightly with the grain. Hand-applied leaf mellows over the years; that shift in tone is normal and not a defect.
Diffuser Panel Dust can settle in the perforations. A dry soft brush or a puff of air clears them; do not push anything through the holes.
Bathrooms IP20, dry locations only. Fine beside a vanity in a ventilated room, not inside a shower zone or anywhere it takes direct steam and splash.
Changing a Bulb Power off, let it cool, and hold the G9 bulb with a cloth. Handle the frame, never the stone panel, while you reach in.

If something happens to the stone: a small chip or a fresh mark on alabaster is usually improvable, but the fix depends on where it is. Send us a photo before you try anything on it — the wrong product turns a mark that would have faded into one that stays.

Installation

Hardwired, and Heavier Than It Looks

This is a solid stone panel on a metal frame, wired straight into the wall. Have a licensed electrician fit it — the job is short, but it is a junction box job, not a hook and a plug.

01

Cut the Power

Switch the circuit off at the breaker, not just at the wall switch, and confirm it is dead before opening the box.

02

Fix the Bracket

Screw the mounting bracket to the junction box itself. Drywall anchors alone will not hold a stone fixture over time.

03

Connect and Level

Match live, neutral and ground, tuck the wires back, then level the backplate before the final tighten — the raw top edge shows any lean.

04

Fit the Bulb

One G9 bulb, sold separately. Hold it with a cloth, restore power, and check the glow is even across the slab.

You Need A standard round junction box in the wall, at the height you want the fixture centred. Mounting bracket, screws and instructions are in the box.
No Box Yet There is no plug-in version. If the wall has no wiring at that spot, an electrician has to run it before the sconce can go up.
Voltage 110V–240V, specified at order. Tell us your market before we ship so the fixture leaves with the right wiring.
Switch & Dimmer Works with a standard wall switch, not included. For dimming, fit a dimmable G9 bulb and a compatible dimmer — the fixture itself has no driver to dim.
Handling Lift and hold the metal frame, never the stone panel, and keep the slab off hard surfaces while you work. Unpack on a towel or the carton flap.

Decide the height before the electrician arrives: moving a junction box afterwards means patching the wall. Hallways and entries usually land at 60–66″ to the centre; beside a bed, around 48″ suits most headboards.

Questions, Answered

Alabaster Wall Sconce FAQ

Will mine look like the photos?
The shape and the gold leaf will. The stone will not. Every slab is cut from a different block, so the veining, the translucency and the raw top edge are unique to your piece.
Is the stone real alabaster?
Yes — natural alabaster, cut from solid stone, on a metal frame. The glow shifts with the thickness of the cut, which a moulded resin panel cannot do.
Is a bulb included, and which one should I use?
No — it takes one G9 bulb at roughly 3–4W and bulbs are not included. Use warm white around 2700K; at 4000K or above the stone reads grey instead of gold.
Can it be dimmed?
Yes, with a dimmable G9 bulb and a compatible wall dimmer. The fixture has no built-in driver, so the dimming comes entirely from the bulb.
How bright is it?
This is accent lighting, not task lighting. It lights a hallway, a bedside or the wall beside a mirror rather than a whole room.
Do I need an electrician?
It is hardwired to a standard junction box and there is no plug-in version, so most customers have an electrician fit it. Decide the height first — moving the box afterwards means patching the wall.
If I buy two, will they match?
They read as a pair in tone and character, but natural stone is never identical. A pair is matched, not mirrored.
How do I clean it, and can I use it in a bathroom?
Dry, soft cloth only — alabaster is porous and gold leaf is thin, so water, sprays and polish leave marks that stay. It is rated IP20, so beside a vanity is fine, inside a shower zone is not.
