Description

Solen inverts the usual proportions of a table lamp. Instead of a tall stem under a narrow shade, it puts a wide oval paper drum on a low, rounded base — 17.7″ across the front but only 9.5″ deep, so it reads generously wide in the room while taking barely more surface than a slim lamp would. The base is solid pine in a deep black lacquer, shaped as a soft dome with no hard edges anywhere on it: rounded at the shoulders, gently tapered toward the table, and just tall enough to lift the shade clear.

The oval is what makes it fit. On a nightstand or a hallway console — surfaces that are always narrower than they are long — a 17.7″ round shade would hang over the front edge, while this one sits flush and still spreads light the full width of the table. Paper diffuses more evenly than glass or metal, so the drum lights at one brightness with no filament showing, and the open top washes the wall behind. Black and warm off-white read cleanly in Japandi, Scandinavian, mid-century and warm-minimal rooms — a low profile table lamp for a nightstand, a console, or a side table where a tall lamp would crowd the sightline.

Why This One

Wide From the Front, Slim From the Side

01

An Oval, Not a Circle

17.7″ across the front, 9.5″ deep. A round shade that wide would hang over the front edge of most nightstands; this one sits flush and still spreads light the full width of the table. Nightstands and consoles are always longer than they are deep — the shade is shaped to match.

02

Lacquered Wood, Not Sprayed Metal

The base is solid pine finished in black lacquer — and getting wood to hold a sheen like this takes work metal never needs. Timber has open grain, so the surface has to be filled, sanded and coated in stages until the pores close. That is why the highlight rolls smoothly across the shoulder instead of breaking over grain lines.

03

No Hard Edge Anywhere

The base is turned as one continuous dome — rounded at the shoulders, softened at the waist, tapered gently to the table. Nothing is chamfered or squared off. That is what keeps a black object this solid from reading as heavy: light rolls over it rather than stopping at a corner.

04

Low Enough to See Over

At 18.6″ the shade sits below eye level when you are sitting up in bed, so the light falls onto a page rather than across your line of sight. A taller lamp on the same nightstand puts the glowing shade right where you would look at your partner.

Caring for lacquered wood and paper: wipe the base with a dry or barely damp soft cloth — a lacquer finish needs no polish, and abrasive pads will dull the sheen permanently. Solid wood responds to the seasons, so keep the lamp away from radiators and direct sun, where prolonged dry heat can stress any timber. Dust the shade with a dry, soft brush or a lint roller, working down the drum. Never use water or any cleaner on the paper — it stains permanently. Let the bulb cool before dusting.

Find Your Fit

Measure the Depth, Not the Width

A round shade this wide would hang over the front of most nightstands. An oval one takes the same visual width and gives back half the surface.

L 17.7″  ×  W 9.5″  ×  H 18.6″
One size · 8.8 lb · oval shade, wide from the front and slim from the side

9.5″

depth · the number that matters

This is what the lamp actually takes from front to back. Most nightstands run 14–16″ deep, so the shade sits well clear of both edges — a round 17.7″ shade would overhang by inches.

17.7″

width across the front

Wide enough to spread light across a whole nightstand rather than pooling in one corner. Suits a surface from about 24″ long — the shade should read as filling the table, not sitting on it.

18.6″

overall height

Low for a table lamp, deliberately. On a 24–26″ nightstand the shade sits below eye level when you sit up in bed, so light falls on the page instead of across your line of sight.

Oval vs Round, on the Same Nightstand

Seen from above, on a 16″-deep surface

Solen — oval sits clear of both edges A round 17.7″ shade overhangs front and back 16″ deep nightstand 16″ deep nightstand

Drawn to scale. Nightstand shown for reference only and is not included.

A line drawing gives the Solen lamp as 17.7 inches long, 9.5 inches deep and 18.6 inches tall.
Sizing to the Surface Check depth first: you need about 12″ front to back, which nearly every nightstand and console has. Then check length — a surface from about 24″ long lets the 17.7″ shade read as proportioned rather than oversized.
Which Way It Faces An oval has a front. Turn the long axis parallel to the wall and the lamp fills the table visually while staying shallow; turn it side-on and you lose both the width and the fit. Set the seam of the shade toward the wall while you are at it.
Setup Plug-in with a standard US two-prong plug — no wiring needed. Fit one E27 bulb, max 40W; the push-button switch sits on the cord, which runs 59″ (150 cm) from the lamp. Bulbs sold separately, and 2700K warm white suits the watercolor paper best.

One thing to check: at 8.8 lb on a rounded base, this lamp sits solidly but has no flat foot to grip — on a glass or lacquered tabletop it can slide if the cord is pulled. Set it back an inch or two from the front edge and route the cord behind the table rather than across it.

How It's Made

Wood That Behaves Like Lacquer

Getting timber to hold a sheen this even takes work that metal never needs. The finish is the craft here — and the curve of the base is what shows it off.

A single soft highlight runs down the curve of the black base beneath the shade rim.

One Unbroken Highlight

Look at how the light travels down the side of the base without stuttering. Pine has open grain, so a coat of paint straight onto raw timber would break that highlight into a hundred small interruptions. Closing the pores — fill, sand, coat, repeat — is the only way to get a curve like this to read as one continuous surface.

A bound edge closes the bottom rim of the drum just above the black shoulder.

Where Paper Meets Lacquer

The bottom rim of the drum is bound rather than left raw, and it sits a measured distance above the widest point of the base — close enough that the two shapes read as one object, far enough that the shade never touches the lacquer. Matte paper against a polished black surface is the whole contrast the lamp is built on.

Seen from above, the base rolls over its shoulder into the stem without a seam.

Turned as One Piece

No chamfer, no squared edge, no joint line anywhere on the body. The shoulder rolls over into the stem in a single move, which is what keeps a solid black object this size from reading as heavy — light travels across it instead of stopping at a corner.

Solid Pine, Not Veneer The base is turned from solid timber rather than wrapped over a composite core. You cannot see the difference through black lacquer, but you feel it: solid wood carries its weight through the whole body, which is why an 8.8 lb lamp this size sits as firmly as it does.
Why the Shade Is Oval An oval frame is harder to wrap than a round one — the paper has to take two different radii around the same rim without creasing at the turn. The reason to do it anyway is fit: 17.7″ of visual width on 9.5″ of surface, which is the difference between a lamp that suits a nightstand and one that overhangs it.
Hand-Wrapped Paper Watercolor paper over a rigid oval frame, closed at a single vertical seam. Paper scatters light more evenly than glass or metal, so the drum lights at one brightness across its whole width — no bright band behind the bulb, and no dark ends where an oval is furthest from the source.

Living with lacquered wood and paper: wipe the base with a dry or barely damp soft cloth — a lacquer finish needs no polish, and an abrasive pad will dull the sheen permanently. Solid wood responds to the seasons, so keep the lamp away from radiators and direct sun. Dust the shade with a soft brush or a lint roller, and never water.

Off & On

The Base Warms Up Too

Unlit, the lacquer picks up the room in cool white. Lit, it picks up the shade instead — and the black turns bronze where the glow lands on it.

Unlit against a pale wall, the shade reads cool white above a deep black base.

Off

Unlit — Daytime

This is when the two materials sit furthest apart. The paper is a cool matte white; the lacquer is a deep black holding a single soft highlight down its curve. Daylight lands on the base and comes back as pale grey — you read the shape of the dome, not its colour. A quiet object on a table, with proportions doing most of the work.

With the bulb on, warm light spills onto the shoulder of the base and turns the black bronze.

On

Lit — 2700K Warm White

The paper turns amber, and the shoulder of the base below it goes bronze — the black is not the same black it was a moment ago. Because the shade sits low and wide, its light lands on the body rather than clearing it entirely. How that works is worth a closer look, just below.

The Bulb Decides The glow above comes from a 2700K warm white bulb, and here it does double duty — it warms the paper and it is what turns the lacquer bronze. Fit a 4000K or 5000K bulb instead and both go grey. One E27, max 40W; a 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens.
Bulbs Sold Separately The lamp takes one standard E27 bulb, which is not included. Choose warm white rather than daylight, and an LED rather than an incandescent — a 5–8W LED runs cool enough that the paper stays the colour it arrived.
Dimming Dimming depends entirely on the bulb. Fit a dimmable E27 and a compatible plug-in dimmer, and the drum drops to a low ember while the reflection on the base fades with it. A standard non-dimmable LED will flicker or refuse to dim — check the packaging before you buy.

Getting the colour right: the single most common reason a warm-material lamp disappoints at home is the bulb, not the lamp. Colour temperature changes what a shade looks like more than most people expect — our guide below covers how to pick the right one the first time.

How the Light Works

The Base Is Part of the Fixture

Most lamps light a room. This one lights itself first — the shade sits low enough to spill onto the base, and the lacquer sends that light back up. Switch it on and watch where it goes.

light falls onto the base and comes back up 17.7″ oval drum on an 18.6″ body

Diagram, not a photograph — drawn to show where the light travels.

Buy the Pair

The Oval Is What Makes Two Possible

Two 17.7″ round shades would overhang whatever they stood on. Two ovals fill the same visual width on 9.5″ of depth — which is why a pair works on the narrow surfaces where pairs actually go.

A matched pair glows on nightstands either side of a bed in a mid-century bedroom.

01  Bedroom

Either Side of the Bed

The horizontal shade echoes the horizontal of the headboard, so a pair frames the bed rather than flanking it. Each lamp keeps its own switch on the cord — one person reads while the other sleeps. And at 9.5″ deep, both nightstands stay usable for a book and a glass, which a round shade this wide would not allow.

Two lamps sit at either end of an entryway console beneath a mirror.

02  Entryway

Both Ends of a Console

This is where the oval fits best of all. Consoles run long and shallow — often only 14″ deep — so a round shade would hang over the front edge where people walk past. Allow about 4 ft between the two lamps so they read as a pair, and leave the middle clear for a tray or a bowl. On a console under 48″, one lamp set off-centre is the better call.

A pair anchors both ends of a low wooden media console in a living room.

03  Living Room

Anchoring a Media Console

A media console is usually the longest surface in the room and the emptiest at both ends. At 18.6″ these sit low enough to leave a wall-mounted screen or artwork uninterrupted, and the warm glow either side takes the hard edge off screen light in the evening — two soft points instead of one bright rectangle.

Face Them the Same Way An oval has a front. Turn both long axes parallel to the wall behind — one shade square to the room next to one turned side-on looks accidental rather than intended. Set both seams toward the wall while you are at it.
Use the Same Bulb in Both Same colour temperature, same wattage, ideally the same brand. On this lamp a mismatch shows twice — once in the paper and again in the lacquered base, which picks up whatever colour the shade throws down onto it.
Spacing Roughly 4 ft between the two is where a pair still reads as a pair. Much closer and they crowd; much further and they become two separate lamps that happen to match. On a bed, the nightstands set that distance for you.

Before you order two: check that both surfaces are the same height, and check the outlet on each side. The cord runs 59″, which reaches most sockets but not all — on a console set away from the wall, the far lamp is usually the one that comes up short. Longer cords are available on request; tell us with the order.

Care

Three Materials, Three Rules

Lacquer, timber and paper each want something different. None of it takes more than a minute, and two of the three mistakes cannot be undone.

The Lacquered Base A dry or barely damp soft cloth, nothing else. Lacquer needs no polish, and a black gloss shows fingerprints readily — but they lift off in seconds. Never use an abrasive pad, scouring cream or solvent cleaner: a dulled patch on a gloss surface cannot be brought back at home, and it shows most on the curve where the highlight runs.
The Solid Timber Wood responds to the seasons — it takes on moisture in humid months and gives it back in dry ones. Keep the lamp away from radiators, heating vents and direct sun, where prolonged dry heat stresses any solid timber. A base that lives in a normally heated room will stay as it arrived for years.
The Paper Shade A dry, soft brush or a lint roller, worked down the drum rather than around it. Never water, a damp cloth or spray cleaner — paper stains permanently, and on a shade this wide the mark sits right at eye level from a chair. Keep the lamp to dry indoor spaces; rated IP20.
Moving It Lift by the base, never by the shade. At 8.8 lb the body is the heavy part, and a rounded lacquered surface can slip out of a hand that is only half holding it — take it with both. Unplug and let the bulb cool before changing it, and reach in through the open top rather than pressing on the paper from the side.

A note on solid wood: timber is a living material, and a fine line or a slight movement at a joint over the years is how wood behaves — not a fault in the finish. It is the trade you make for a base with real weight and depth instead of a hollow composite one. Kept out of direct heat, a lacquered pine base holds its surface for a very long time.

Questions, Answered

Oval Drum Table Lamp FAQ

Will a 17.7″ shade fit my nightstand?
Check the depth, not the width. The shade is oval — 17.7″ across the front but only 9.5″ front to back, so it needs about 12″ of depth. Nearly every nightstand and console has that; a round shade this wide would need 20″ and overhang most of them. For proportion, a surface from about 24″ long lets the width read as filling the table rather than sitting on top of it.
Is 18.6″ tall enough to read by?
Yes, and the low height is deliberate. On a 24–26″ nightstand the shade sits below eye level when you are sitting up in bed, so the light falls on the page rather than across your line of sight — a taller lamp puts a glowing shade right where you would look at your partner. The wide oval also spreads light across the whole surface instead of pooling in one corner.
Is the base really solid wood? It looks like metal in photos.
Solid pine, finished in black lacquer — and the lacquer is why it photographs the way it does. Timber has open grain, so getting a surface to hold a sheen this even means filling the pores, sanding and coating in stages until the wood reads as one continuous curve. That is work metal never needs, and it is why the highlight travels down the side of the dome without breaking over grain lines.
Will the wood crack or change over time?
Solid timber responds to the seasons — it takes on moisture in humid months and releases it in dry ones. In a normally heated room a lacquered pine base holds its surface for years. Keep it away from radiators, heating vents and direct sun, where prolonged dry heat stresses any solid wood. A fine line or slight movement at a joint over the years is how timber behaves, not a fault in the finish — it is the trade for a base with real weight rather than a hollow composite one.
Is a bulb included, and which one should I use?
No — the lamp takes one E27 base up to 40W and bulbs are not included. Use warm white around 2700K, which here does double duty: it warms the paper and it is what turns the lacquered base bronze where the light lands on it. Fit a 4000K or 5000K bulb and both go grey. A 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens and runs cool enough that the paper stays the colour it arrived. For dimming, fit a dimmable bulb and a compatible plug-in dimmer.
How do I clean a gloss black finish without marking it?
Base: a dry or barely damp soft cloth, nothing else. Gloss black shows fingerprints readily but they lift off in seconds. Never use an abrasive pad, scouring cream or solvent cleaner — a dulled patch on a gloss surface cannot be brought back at home, and it shows most on the curve where the highlight runs. Shade: a dry soft brush or a lint roller worked down the drum, and never water on the paper. Rated IP20 — dry indoor spaces only. Lift the lamp by the base, never by the shade.

The Solen Table Lamp Series — Where Light Meets the Warmth of Craft

Every home has a moment that calls for quiet pause — the morning coffee on the kitchen island, the handwritten note at dusk, the gentle slowdown before bedtime. The Solen Table Lamp was made for those quiet moments.

Crafted with a solid wooden base carved into a sculpted drum, it grounds your room with natural weight and organic warmth. Rising above, its watercolor paper shade diffuses light with an artful, textured softness — turning a simple bulb into a gentle glow that warms the space without ever overwhelming it.

Organic Harmony —

The Art of Solid Wood and Paper

The Solen is sculpted from rich solid wood with a smooth, matte black finish — featuring a heavy drum-shaped base that anchors the light, paired with an ethereal wide shade made of genuine watercolor paper.

Every material serves a purpose. The solid wooden base gives the lamp a grounded, timeless presence, while the tactile watercolor paper shade catches the light, softening it into an artistic, ambient glow. Form follows feeling.

Of Wood, Paper, and Quiet Elegance — this is modern organic design at its most honest. Pure geometric silhouettes, tactile natural textures, and a presence that endures because it was never made to overwhelm. Only to bring warmth to your home.

Shade Material Craftsmanship: Premium Watercolor Paper vs. Standard Coarse Linen

Artistic, soft ambient glow or rough, harsh glare — see what makes our quality different
Premium
Our Premium Materials

Our Premium Materials

  • Hand-selected watercolor paper — unique fine-pitted texture creates an artful, watercolor-like diffusion
  • Soft light scattering — completely eliminates harsh glare to cast a soothing, ambient pool of light
  • Seamless edge refinement — clean, minimal profile with no loose threads or frayed hems over time
  • Anti-static, dust-resistant surface — maintains its pristine, paper-texture elegance effortless for years
Standard Materials

Standard Materials

  • Cheap coarse linen fabric — rough, uneven weave with visible loose threads and messy fraying
  • Inefficient light filtration — harsh light leaks through sparse gaps, creating distracting, patchy shadows
  • Unfinished edge construction — prone to unraveling, sagging, and trapping dust between coarse fibers
  • Poor thermal stability — fabric warps and discolors quickly under bulb heat, losing its shape over time
