Description

Thorne is a sculpted brass floor lamp with a hammered stem that parts once into an elongated loop and closes again. The brass is chemically darkened rather than painted, so the treatment sits in the metal instead of filling the recesses — every ridge the hammer left still catches the light. The base is a flat cast brass disc with the same worked surface.

The shade is watercolor paper, hand-wrapped over a rigid drum frame. It scatters light more evenly than glass or metal, glowing at one brightness with no filament visible at eye level, and the open top washes the wall behind. Full standing height on a footprint under a foot across — for a reading chair, a sofa end, or a corner that needs height rather than furniture.

Why This One

A Stem That Opens, Then Closes

01

One Gesture, Not a Pattern

The stem runs hand-textured its whole length, then partway up it parts into a single elongated loop and closes again. Nothing repeats and nothing is added on top. That restraint is what makes it read as sculpture rather than as decoration applied to a pole.

02

Brass Darkened, Not Sprayed Black

The black comes from treating the brass itself. On a hammered surface that is the difference between seeing the texture and burying it — paint settles into the recesses and flattens them, while a darkened finish leaves every ridge and hollow open to the light.

03

Watercolor Paper, Evenly Lit

The shade is hand-wrapped over a rigid drum frame. Paper scatters light more evenly than glass or metal, so no part of the drum becomes a bright spot and no filament shows at eye level. The open top sends a wash up the wall behind instead of stopping at the shade line.

04

A Flat Brass Disc, Not a Dome

The base is a low cast plate carrying the same worked surface as the stem. Full standing height on a footprint under a foot across — it slides between a sofa arm and a wall where a tripod or a weighted dome would not go.

Caring for brass and paper: wipe the stem and base with a dry or barely damp soft cloth — no polish or abrasive cleaner, which strips a darkened finish back toward raw brass and cannot be touched up. Dust the shade with a dry, soft brush or a lint roller, working down the drum rather than across the seam. Never use water or any cleaner on the paper — it stains permanently and will not recover. Let the bulb cool before dusting.

Find Your Fit

Nearly Six Feet, Almost No Floor

A floor lamp usually asks you to give up a square of room to get height. Thorne stands above eye level on a disc you could cover with a dinner plate.

D 20.1″  ×  H 69.5″
One size · shade width at the widest point

69.5″

overall height

Just under six feet — above standing eye level, so the shade clears the back of an armchair and the light falls on a page rather than into your eyes.

20.1″

widest point

The shade is the widest part of the lamp; the brass disc below it is far narrower. Measure clearance at shade height, not at the floor.

10–16″

off the chair arm

Far enough that the shade clears your shoulder when seated, close enough that the light still reaches what you are reading.

Thorne Sculpted Brass Floor Lamp dimension diagram — 20.1 inch shade width and 69.5 inch height | HoaiLamp
Where to Stand It Beside a reading chair, at the end of a sofa just behind the front line of the seat, or in a corner that needs height rather than more furniture. The disc takes almost no floor, but leave the shade room to clear a chair back — check the 20.1″ at shade height, not the base.
Turning the Stem The loop in the stem reads differently depending on where you stand. Face it into the room and it opens up; turn it side-on and it nearly disappears into a line. Rotate the lamp before you settle — this is the detail people notice from a seated position.
Setup Plug-in with a standard US two-prong plug — no wiring needed. Fit one E27 bulb, max 40W; the switch sits on the cord. Bulbs sold separately, and 2700K warm white suits the watercolor paper best.

One thing to check: the base is a flat cast disc rather than a weighted dome, so it wants a level floor. On deep pile carpet, make sure the whole plate is bearing evenly before you let go of it — a lamp this tall on an uneven bearing will lean. Keep the cord routed where nobody will hook a foot through it.

Off & On

Sculpture by Day, Light by Night

Unlit, Thorne is a dark line with one opening in it — the loop and the hammered surface are what you see. Lit, the paper takes over and the stem recedes into a silhouette.

Thorne sculpted brass floor lamp unlit against a concrete wall — hammered blackened brass stem with a single loop and a watercolor paper drum shade | HoaiLamp

Unlit — Daytime

This is when the metal does the work. Daylight rakes across the hammered stem and every ridge the tool left picks up a highlight, so the brass reads as worked surface rather than as a black tube. The loop sits open against the wall behind it, and the paper stays a cool, matte cream — quiet enough to leave standing in a corner all day.

Thorne sculpted brass floor lamp lit with a 2700K warm white bulb against a concrete wall — watercolor paper shade glowing amber with a wash on the wall | HoaiLamp

Lit — 2700K Warm White

The paper turns amber and the whole drum becomes the source — no bright filament, no hard edge. The open top throws a wide wash onto the wall behind, which is what fills a corner rather than punching a spot into it. The stem drops back to a silhouette, and the loop reads as a shape cut out of the light.

What Changes The two halves of this lamp trade places. Off, the eye goes to the hammered brass and the loop; on, the brass recedes and the paper becomes the whole object. Worth knowing if the lamp will stand somewhere you look at all day — you are buying both versions.
The Bulb Decides The glow above comes from a 2700K warm white bulb. Fit a 4000K or 5000K bulb instead and the same watercolor paper reads flat and clinical — closer to a workshop than a reading corner. One E27, max 40W; a 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens, which is right for reading beside a chair.
Dimming Dimming depends entirely on the bulb. Fit a dimmable E27 and a compatible plug-in dimmer, and the paper drops to a low ember for late evening. A standard non-dimmable LED will flicker or refuse to dim — check the packaging before you buy.

Getting the colour right: the single most common reason a warm-material lamp disappoints at home is the bulb, not the lamp. We wrote a guide on why colour temperature changes what a shade looks like, and how to pick the right one the first time — read it here.

Where It Goes

Three Corners That Need Height

A floor lamp earns its place where a table lamp can't reach and another piece of furniture won't fit. These are the three spots Thorne does best.

Thorne sculpted brass floor lamp lit beside a green sofa in a mid-century living room | HoaiLamp

01  Living Room

At the End of the Sofa

Stand it just behind the front line of the seat, not level with the arm — that way the shade clears your shoulder and the light lands on your lap rather than on the cushion beside you. At 69.5″ it reaches over the sofa back, so one lamp covers the whole end of the seating rather than lighting a single corner of it. The disc slides in where a side table would need a foot and a half.

Thorne sculpted brass floor lamp beside a reading chair in a study corner with bookshelves | HoaiLamp

02  Study

Beside a Reading Chair

This is what the height is for. Set it 10–16″ off the chair arm and slightly behind you: far enough that the shade clears your shoulder, close enough that the light still reaches the page. Against bookshelves the paper does something a bare bulb can't — it lights the spines without throwing a reflection across the glass or the frames on the wall.

Thorne sculpted brass floor lamp standing beside the bed in a master bedroom corner | HoaiLamp

03  Bedroom

In the Corner Beside the Bed

Where the nightstand is too small for a lamp, or already full. Standing beside the bed rather than on it, Thorne frees the surface for a book and a glass while the open top washes the wall — a softer read than a downward pool, and enough on its own to leave the ceiling light off. The cord switch stays within reach from the mattress.

How It's Made

A Finish That Keeps the Texture

Worked brass and a black finish usually cancel each other out. The way this one is darkened is what lets both survive.

Macro detail of the sculpted loop in the hammered blackened brass stem of the Thorne floor lamp | HoaiLamp

The Loop, Up Close

The stem parts and rejoins in one continuous run — no weld line across the opening, no seam where the two sides meet at the top and bottom of the loop. The hammered surface carries straight through the curve, which is the tell that the shape was worked rather than assembled from two pieces bent to meet.

Textured cast brass disc base and stem junction on the Thorne sculpted floor lamp | HoaiLamp

Where the Stem Meets the Disc

The base carries the same worked surface as the stem, radiating out from the centre where the two join. Nothing is capped or covered at the junction — the texture runs from the disc up into the stem without a collar hiding the transition, which is where most floor lamps put a chrome ring to disguise the joint.

Darkened, Not Painted The black comes from treating the brass itself rather than spraying a colour over it. On a smooth surface the difference is subtle. On a hammered one it decides everything: paint pools in the recesses and levels them out, while a darkened finish sits in the metal and leaves every ridge and hollow open to the light. It also wears into the brass over years instead of chipping off at the high points.
No Two Are Identical Because the surface is worked by hand, the pattern of marks differs from piece to piece — denser in places, more open in others. The lamp you receive will not match the photograph ridge for ridge. That variation is the point of the process, not a flaw in it.
Hand-Wrapped Paper The shade is watercolor paper, wrapped by hand over a rigid drum frame and closed at a single vertical seam — turn that seam toward the wall. Paper is what makes the light even: it scatters more softly than glass or metal, so no part of the drum becomes a bright spot and nothing shows through at eye level.

Living with brass and paper: wipe the stem and base with a dry or barely damp soft cloth — metal polish or anything abrasive will strip the darkened layer back toward raw brass, starting at the high points of the texture where it shows most, and it cannot be touched up. Dust the shade with a soft brush or a lint roller, never water.

Care

Dry Cloth, Soft Brush, Nothing Else

Both materials here are easy to keep and easy to ruin. The mistakes take seconds and cannot be undone, so they are worth two minutes of reading.

The Blackened Brass Stem & Base

A dry or barely damp soft cloth, wiped along the length of the stem rather than around it. Dust settles in the recesses of a hammered surface, so a soft dry brush reaches what a cloth skims over. Fingerprints lift straight off — there is nothing to polish and nothing that needs it.

Never

Metal polish, brass cleaner, vinegar, or any abrasive pad. A darkened surface is a chemical layer in the brass, not a coating over it — and on worked metal it strips first at the high points of the texture, where raw brass shows most. It cannot be matched or touched up afterward.

The Watercolor Paper Shade

A dry, soft brush or a lint roller, worked down the drum rather than around it. Going across the seam catches the edge; going down it does not. A hairdryer on cool, held back a foot, clears dust from the inside without touching the paper at all.

Never

Water, a damp cloth, or any spray cleaner. Paper stains permanently, and the mark shows twice as strongly once the lamp is lit — a small damp patch becomes a dark shadow across the whole panel.

Moving It Lift by the stem, low down, with a hand steadying the base — never by the shade. A lamp this tall pivots as soon as you take hold of the top, and the paper is the one part that will not survive it. Vacuuming around it, move the lamp rather than working the nozzle past the base.
Standing It The base is a flat cast disc, not a weighted dome, so it wants a level floor. On deep pile carpet, press it down and check the whole plate is bearing evenly before you let go — at nearly six feet an uneven bearing shows as a lean. Keep the cord routed where nobody will hook a foot through it.
Changing the Bulb Unplug first and let the bulb cool. Lift the shade off rather than reaching through it — the rigid frame will hold a dent if you push against the paper from inside. Fit one E27 bulb up to 40W, then set the shade back and turn the seam toward the wall.

Will the paper yellow? Not under LED. Yellowing comes from heat, and a 5–8W LED runs cool enough that the shade stays the colour it arrived. A 40W incandescent bulb run for hours every evening is a different story — if you prefer the look of a filament, choose an LED filament bulb instead. Keep the lamp out of bathrooms and away from open windows in damp weather: paper absorbs humidity long before anything looks wrong.

Questions, Answered

Sculpted Brass Floor Lamp FAQ

Is the stem solid brass, or metal with a black coating?
Stem and base are both brass, chemically darkened. The black comes from treating the metal itself rather than spraying a colour over it. On a hammered surface that decides everything: paint pools in the recesses and levels them out, while a darkened finish sits in the brass and leaves every ridge open to the light. It also wears into the metal over years instead of chipping off at the high points.
Is the shade paper or fabric?
Watercolor paper, hand-wrapped over a rigid drum frame and closed at a single vertical seam — turn that seam toward the wall. Paper scatters light more evenly than glass or metal, so the whole drum glows at one brightness with no filament visible at eye level. It will not yellow under LED, and the rigid frame keeps it from sagging.
Will the marks on the stem match the photographs?
Not exactly, and that is intended. The surface is worked by hand, so the pattern of marks runs denser in some places and more open in others, and it differs from one lamp to the next. The shape, the finish and the proportions are consistent; the texture is not. If you want a surface identical to the photograph, this is not the right lamp.
Is a bulb included, and which one should I use?
No — the lamp takes one E27 base up to 40W and bulbs are not included. Use warm white around 2700K: that is what our photography uses and what turns the paper amber. Cool white at 4000K or above makes the same shade read flat and clinical. A 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens, which is right for reading beside a chair. For dimming, fit a dimmable bulb and a compatible plug-in dimmer — a standard LED will flicker or refuse to dim.
How much floor space does it need, and where should it stand?
Less than most floor lamps. The base is a flat cast disc, not a tripod or a weighted dome, so it slides between a sofa arm and a wall where a wider base will not go. Measure the shade rather than the floor: it runs 20.1″ at its widest point, well above the base. Beside a chair, stand it 10–16″ off the arm and slightly behind you — far enough that the shade clears your shoulder, close enough that the light reaches the page.
How do I clean it, and can I use it in a bathroom?
Stem and base: a dry or barely damp soft cloth, plus a soft dry brush for the recesses of the hammered surface. Never metal polish, brass cleaner or anything abrasive — it strips the darkened layer first at the high points, and it cannot be touched up. Shade: a dry soft brush or a lint roller, worked down the drum. Never use water on the paper. Keep it to dry indoor spaces: rated IP20, and paper absorbs humidity long before anything looks wrong. Move the lamp by the stem with a hand on the base — never by the shade.

The Thorne Floor Lamp Series —

Where Sculptural Art Meets Quiet Evenings

When the daylight fades, true comfort is found in the quiet nooks of your home — beside a plush armchair, under a sheer window curtain, or next to a warm cup of tea waiting on the side table. The Thorne Floor Lamp was sculpted for these calm, reflective moments.

Its handcrafted brass stem, finished in a deep blackened tone with organic, bark-like textures, rises slenderly into an iconic sculpted open-ring loop. Crowned by a crinkled watercolor paper shade, it transforms harsh illumination into a soft, textured glow, casting an inviting warmth that grounds your space in artful serenity.

Artisanal Craftsmanship —

Organic Form meets Sculptural Soul

The Thorne Floor Lamp is forged from solid brass with a hand-applied blackened finish — featuring a heavy, bark-textured circular base, a slender vertical stem with an open-ring loop accent, and a drum shade crafted from crinkled, fibrous watercolor paper.

Every detail tells a story of tactile beauty. The hand-sculpted open loop breaks the linear silhouette with artful poise, while the organic texture of the blackened brass catches subtle highlights. Above, the textured paper shade filters light into a soft, layered glow, reminiscent of warm parchment.

Of Brass, Paper, and Quiet Elegance — this is sculptural design in its most soulful form: raw materials, visible craftsmanship, and a timeless presence that turns any corner into a sanctuary of warmth and art.

Standard Materials

Standard Materials

  • Harsh Center Hot Spot — clear or thin diffusers fail to block the bulb, creating intensely bright, blinding glare.
  • Uneven Light Distribution — light concentrates in the center while leaving edges dim and shadowy.
  • Flat Visual Appeal — lacks organic texture, resulting in cold, clinical, and characterless illumination.
  • Uncomfortable Sharp Light — causes harsh shadows and visual discomfort during prolonged evening use.
