Vent is a cantilever floor lamp that carries its shade from above rather than beneath. A flat arm reaches out from the top of the upright, and the watercolor paper drum hangs from it — suspended through an opening in its own top, with nothing under the shade at all. That single move is what lets the lamp reach over the arm of a sofa or the back of a reading chair: the base stays behind the furniture, the light arrives above where you sit.

The frame is brushed gunmetal stainless steel, a finish with a fine directional grain that reads as graphite in daylight and near-black at night — warmer than matte black, quieter than polish. Where to Stand It Behind a sofa arm or beside a reading chair, with the foot tucked back and the arm reaching forward over the seat. Measure the depth of your sofa arm first — the shade lands about 30″ forward of the back of the foot, which clears most arms with room to spare. Nothing needs to sit under the shade.
Which Way It Faces The upright is flat bar, so it reads as a clean line from the front and nearly disappears edge-on. Face the flat side to the room and the lamp is a drawn vertical; turn it edge-on and only the shade registers. The arm points where the light goes — decide that first, then rotate the upright to suit.

Every ounce of the shade's weight passes through this one right angle. The arm meets the upright flat to flat rather than through a collar or a bracket, so the joint reads as a single bent line — and the cord loops down from underneath, close enough to follow the metal rather than swing free of it.

Hung Through Its Own Top

The shade has no stem beneath it and no harp around it. A slim fitting drops from the arm through a round opening cut in the shade top, taking the whole drum from a single point above — which is why nothing interrupts the cylinder from any angle you see it.

Closed Underneath, Not Open

Most drum shades leave the bottom open and the bulb visible to anyone sitting below. This one closes it with a second layer of paper and leaves a small central aperture — the surface glows warm, a narrow beam passes straight down, and the source stays out of sight.

Brushed, Not Painted The gunmetal surface carries a fine directional grain running the length of each bar. Daylight travels along it and gives the steel a graphite depth; after dark it reads as near-black. A painted finish would be flat from every angle, and a polished one would throw a hard highlight down the upright — brushed sits between the two.
Flat Bar Throughout Upright, arm and foot are all flat stock rather than round tube. That is what lets the whole frame read as a line drawing from the front and almost vanish edge-on — and it is why the foot can slide under the edge of a sofa where a round base would sit proud of it.
Hand-Wrapped Paper The drum is watercolor paper wrapped by hand over a rigid frame, with a second panel closing the base. Paper scatters light more evenly than glass or metal, so the whole cylinder lights at one brightness — no bright band behind the bulb, and no dark side away from it.

Unlit — Daytime

This is when the frame does the work. Daylight runs along the brushed grain and the gunmetal reads as graphite rather than black, so the upright and arm draw a clear right angle against the wall. The drum hangs pale and quiet at the end of it — a shape held in the air, with nothing underneath.

On

Lit — 2700K Warm White

The drum turns amber and the gunmetal recedes to a dark outline holding it up. Because the shade is closed underneath, what lands on the floor is a soft pool from the central aperture rather than a hard cone of light — and the paper itself glows at one even brightness from every side.

What Changes Off, the cantilever is the subject — you read the reach before you read the shade. On, the reach stops mattering visually and starts mattering practically: the light is simply there, over the seat, with no lamp standing in the way of it. That is the whole reason for the shape.
The Bulb Decides The glow above comes from a 2700K warm white bulb. Fit a 4000K or 5000K bulb instead and the watercolor paper reads flat and clinical against the gunmetal. One E27, max 40W; a 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens, which is right for reading beside a chair. Bulbs sold separately.
Dimming Dimming depends entirely on the bulb. Fit a dimmable E27 and a compatible plug-in dimmer, and the drum drops to a low ember while the pool beneath fades with it. A standard non-dimmable LED will flicker or refuse to dim — check the packaging before you buy.

Care

Follow the Grain, Skip the Water

Two materials, two rules. A brushed finish cares which direction you wipe; paper cares whether the cloth is dry. Neither takes more than a minute.

 

The Brushed Gunmetal Frame

A dry or barely damp soft cloth, wiped along the grain — down the upright, out along the arm, side to side across the foot. The grain runs the length of each bar, so following it hides the wipe entirely. The top face of the arm collects dust you cannot see from below; check it when you change a bulb.

Never

Wipe across the grain, and never use an abrasive pad or metal polish. A brushed surface shows cross-grain marks that a matte finish would hide — and once the grain is disturbed in one patch, the only fix is refinishing the whole bar.

 

The Watercolor Paper Drum

A dry, soft brush or a lint roller, worked down the drum rather than around it. Because the shade hangs free rather than sitting on a stem, support it with one hand while you dust with the other — pressure on one side alone will swing it. The closed bottom panel collects less dust than an open shade would, but it is the surface people see from a chair.

Never

Water, a damp cloth, or any spray cleaner. Paper stains permanently, and on a drum lit from within the mark shows from every angle — there is no back side to turn toward the wall.

Moving It Lift by the upright, low down — never by the arm and never by the shade. On a cantilever the arm is a lever: taking hold of it puts the whole weight of the lamp on the one joint that holds the design together. And the drum hangs from a single fitting, so a hand on the shade pulls against that point directly.
Standing It The weight sits forward of the foot, so a level floor matters more here than on a conventional lamp. On deep pile carpet, press the whole foot down and check it is not rocking before you let go. Set the arm reaching away from walking paths rather than across them, and route the cord behind the furniture.
Changing the Bulb Unplug first and let the bulb cool. Reach up through the open top of the shade rather than pressing against the paper from the side — the drum will swing on its fitting, and a hand on the wall of it leaves a crease. Fit one E27 bulb up to 40W, then check the shade is hanging level before you plug back in.

Will the paper yellow? Not under LED. Yellowing comes from heat, and a 5–8W LED runs cool enough that the drum stays the colour it arrived. A 40W incandescent is a different story here — the shade is closed underneath, so heat has less room to escape than it would in an open drum. If you prefer the look of a filament, choose an LED filament bulb rather than a true incandescent.

Will the arm reach over my sofa?
The lamp measures 30.3″ front to back, so the shade lands roughly two and a half feet forward of the back of the foot. Most sofa arms are 8–12″ deep, which leaves the shade well over the seat with the base still standing behind the furniture. Measure the depth of your sofa arm first — on a deep sectional with a wide arm, check that 30″ puts the light where you actually sit rather than short of it.
Is a cantilever stable? The weight looks like it's all at the front.
The foot runs 16.5″ side to side and extends back under the upright, which is what counters the reach — the same principle as a desk lamp arm on a weighted base. What matters is the setup: it needs a level floor with the whole foot bearing. On deep pile carpet, press it down and check it is not rocking before you let go, and set the arm reaching away from walking paths rather than across them.
Will I see the bulb when I'm sitting under it?
No. Most drum shades are open top and bottom, which is exactly why a hanging lamp usually glares from below. Does the arm or the shade adjust?
No — the geometry is fixed. The arm does not swing, telescope or tilt, and the shade hangs at a set height. That is a deliberate trade: a joint that moves is a joint that loosens, sags and eventually shows wear, and it would break the single bent line the design is built on. You position this lamp by moving the whole lamp, not by adjusting part of it.
Is a bulb included, and which one should I use?
No — the lamp takes one E27 base up to 40W and bulbs are not included. Use warm white around 2700K: that is what our photography uses, and it is what warms the paper against the gunmetal. Cool white at 4000K or above makes the shade read flat and clinical. A 5–8W LED lands around 450–600 lumens, right for reading beside a chair. For dimming, fit a dimmable bulb and a compatible plug-in dimmer. Because the shade is closed underneath, choose an LED rather than an incandescent — heat has less room to escape than in an open drum.
