One Block of Stone

Every Flute Carved from One Piece of Alabaster

The shade is carved and hollowed from a single block of alabaster, then its ten flutes are ground and polished by hand. The veining runs unbroken around the whole shade, the clouding shifts from flute to flute, and when the lamp is on, the thinner places glow brightest.

Darker veins, cloudy patches and small natural pits are part of the stone, not flaws. No two shades are identical.

On a nightstand	Best on surfaces about 24″–28″ high and at least 16″ wide. The shade sits near shoulder height when you sit up in bed.
On a console	Works on a 30″–34″ console, alone at one end or as a matching pair at both ends.

The Design

A Classical Column, Softened in Stone

Fluting is one of the oldest ideas in architecture: vertical grooves cut into a column so light and shadow run up and down it. Here the idea is turned inside out. The flutes are the shade, the column runs through the middle, and the light comes from within.

The obelisk base keeps everything upright and formal, while the rounded alabaster flutes soften it. By day it is a piece of stone on the table; at night it becomes the warmest thing in the room.

The Material

Real Alabaster, Not Printed Resin

Stone-look lamps are often resin or acrylic with a printed pattern. Here is what changes when the shade is real stone.
