How to Tell Real Alabaster From Resin

In a photograph, a resin shade and a stone one can look almost identical. Both glow warm. Both show veining. Both get described as "alabaster" in the listing. The difference only becomes obvious once the box is open — and by then you have paid for one or the other.

Here is what actually separates them, in the order you can check it.

We sell alabaster lighting, so read this with that in mind. Every test below is one you can run on our fixtures as easily as on anyone else's — which is rather the point of publishing it.

1. Look for a pattern that repeats

This is the single most reliable test, and you can run it before buying.

Resin shades are cast in a mould. That mould was made from one master piece, so every unit carries the same veining in the same places. Open a listing with several photos, or look at a set of three pendants: if the same swirl appears in the same position on more than one shade, it came out of a mould.

Stone cannot do this. Each shade is cut from a different part of a different block, so the grain lands wherever the geology put it. Two pieces from the same order will not match, and a row of three will show three distinct patterns.

What to do: ask the seller for photos of the actual piece being shipped, or of several units side by side. A stone supplier will have them. A resin supplier usually sends the same render every time.

2. Pick it up

Alabaster is a gypsum stone with a density around 2.3 g/cm³. Cast resin sits closer to 1.2. In practice that means a stone shade of any size feels roughly twice as heavy as it looks, and resin feels lighter than expected — the moment you lift it, you know.

Temperature tells you the same thing. Stone draws heat out of your hand and stays cool for as long as you hold it. Resin warms to skin temperature within seconds, the way plastic does. One of our customers put it more plainly than we would have: the stone felt cold and heavy, and she knew immediately it was not plastic or resin.

3. Find an edge and look at the cut

Every stone shade has an edge somewhere — a rim, an opening, a base. On stone, that edge shows a fine crystalline structure and the veining runs through it, continuing from the outer surface into the material and out the other side.

On resin, the pattern is printed or suspended near the surface only. Look at the cut edge and you will often see plain material underneath, or a seam line where the two halves of the mould met. That seam is the giveaway: stone has no seams because it was never in two pieces.

4. Check what the listing actually says

Wording is where a lot of the ambiguity lives, and most of it is deliberate.

Says it is stone

Natural alabaster · genuine alabaster · natural gypsum stone · carved from quarried stone · solid alabaster

Says it is not

Alabaster-style · alabaster effect · faux alabaster · alabaster-look resin · composite stone · or simply no material stated at all

The last one matters most. If a listing describes the glow at length and never names the material, that is usually the answer. A seller with real stone says so, because it is the expensive part.

5. Switch it on and look for depth

This is the difference that photographs flatten, and the reason so many people are surprised either way when the lamp arrives.

Light entering stone scatters between crystals at different depths before it comes out again. What you see is not a lit surface but a lit volume — the veining sits at different levels within the material, brighter where the wall runs thin, deeper where it thickens, and the whole thing has an interior to it.

Resin scatters light too, and it can look very good doing it — but evenly, and at one depth. The result is a smooth panel of light with a pattern sitting flat on it.

Both lit. The stone on the left glows unevenly — brighter where the wall runs thin, deep amber where a mineral band crosses it. The resin on the right is handsome, but its pattern sits on one plane and the surface brightness barely varies.

One caveat: a cool-white bulb flattens stone until it looks like resin. If your alabaster fixture reads grey and uniform, check the bulb before you doubt the material — 4000K and above drains the warmth out of the stone entirely.

Why resin looks the same in photographs

Because a photograph removes every test above except the first one.

You cannot feel weight in an image, or temperature, or the crystalline structure at a cut edge. Depth of glow survives poorly on a screen, especially after the image has been brightened and colour-corrected for a listing. What is left is the veining pattern — and a good mould reproduces that convincingly.

Which is why the repeat test matters more than anything else you can do before buying. It is the one check that still works through a screen.

Does resin have a place?

Yes, and it is worth saying plainly. Resin is lighter, which matters on a large fixture or a weak ceiling box. It does not chip the way gypsum does, and it costs considerably less. For a rental, a child's room or a high-traffic hallway, those are real advantages.

The problem is not resin. The problem is resin sold as stone at stone prices — which is why the tests above are worth running.

A checklist before you buy

Does the listing name the material, or only describe the glow?
Do multiple photos show the same veining in the same place?
Is a weight given, and is it consistent with stone?
Is there a photo of a cut edge or rim?
Does the seller mention that veining varies piece to piece?
Is there a care note about water and acidic cleaners?
