What Size Chandelier for a Dining Table

Almost every guide to this question starts with the room. That is the wrong place to start. Over a dining table, the table sets the size — a fixture that suits the room but not the table will look wrong from every seat at it.

Here is the arithmetic, the hanging height, and the two situations where the usual rule does not apply.

The Numbers

½ to ⅔ of the table width — the fixture's diameter or length
30–36″ from the tabletop to the bottom of the fixture
+3″ per foot of ceiling above 8 ft
6″ minimum clear tabletop beyond each end of the fixture
72″ the table length above which one round fixture stops being enough

All heights measured to the lowest point of the fixture, not to the canopy.

Size to the table, not the room

The room-size formula you have probably seen — add the length and width in feet, read the answer as inches — works for a living room or an entry. Over a dining table it gives you a number that is almost always too large, because it ignores the object the fixture is actually lighting.

Use the table instead. Take the width of the tabletop and aim for half to two-thirds of it. A 42″-wide table wants a fixture between 21″ and 28″; a 48″ table wants 24″ to 32″.

The lower end of that range reads restrained and lets the table lead. The upper end makes the fixture the feature. Both are correct; what is not correct is going above two-thirds, which starts to crowd the table visually, or below half, which leaves the fixture looking like it belongs to a different room.

Table Width Fixture Size Typical Table
36″ 18–24″ Round, seats 4
42″ 21–28″ Round or square, seats 4–6
48″ 24–32″ Round, seats 6
60″+ 30–40″ Large round, seats 8

Long tables are a different problem

The half-to-two-thirds rule assumes a round or square table. On a rectangular one it still applies to the width — but a single round fixture over a 90″ table leaves both ends in shadow no matter how wide it is.

Above roughly 72″ of table length, stop thinking about one fixture and consider two options instead.

Option One

A linear fixture

One piece running along the table's length, sized to about half to two-thirds of it. Reads as a single deliberate object and needs only one junction box — usually the easier retrofit.

Option Two

Two matching fixtures

Each sized to roughly a third of the table length, spaced so they divide it evenly. More light at both ends, more visual rhythm — and two junction boxes to run before the walls close up.

Whichever you choose, keep at least 6″ of clear tabletop beyond each end of the fixture. That margin is what stops a linear pendant from looking like it is about to slide off the table, and it is the measurement people most often skip.

How high to hang it

30 to 36 inches from the tabletop to the lowest point of the fixture, on a standard 8 ft ceiling. Lower than 30″ and people at the table are looking into it; higher than 36″ and it stops feeling connected to the table at all.

Add roughly 3″ for every foot of ceiling above 8 ft. A 10 ft ceiling puts the fixture at 36–42″ above the table; a 12 ft ceiling at 42–48″.

Two adjustments worth making. If the fixture is open at the bottom and the bulb is visible, go to the top of the range so nobody is looking straight at it from a seat. If the shade is solid or fully diffusing — stone, opal glass, a fabric drum — you can sit at 30″ comfortably, and the lower position puts more light on the table.

And measure from the tabletop, not the floor. Dining tables vary between about 28″ and 31″ high, which is enough to throw the calculation off if you work from the floor up.

Before the electrician arrives

The junction box needs to sit over the center of the table, and tables get moved during renovations. Mark the final table position on the floor in tape before anyone cuts into the ceiling — a box that ends up eight inches off center is visible from every seat, and moving it later means patching the ceiling.

When the rule does not apply

The table is against a wall or in a corner

Center the fixture on the table, not on the room, and expect the arrangement to look off-center from the doorway. That is correct. The eye reads the fixture against the table it sits over, not against the walls around it.

The table extends with a leaf

Size to the table as you use it most days, not to its fully extended length. A fixture sized for the once-a-year configuration will look oversized for the other 360 days.

The ceiling is under 8 ft

30″ above a 30″ table leaves the fixture at 60″ from the floor — below eye level for anyone standing. On a low ceiling, either accept that people will walk around rather than under it, or choose a semi-flush fixture and give up the drop entirely.

One thing size will not fix

A correctly sized fixture at the correct height can still make a dining room feel wrong, and it is usually the bulb rather than the fixture. A dining room wants 2700K warm white on a dimmer — bright while you serve, low once everyone is seated.

This is the single strongest case for dimming anywhere in the house, and it is worth specifying the dimmer at the same time as the fixture rather than adding it later.

The short version

Half to two-thirds of the table width. Thirty to thirty-six inches above the tabletop, plus three inches for every foot of ceiling over eight. Six inches of clear table beyond each end. Above a 72″ table, use a linear fixture or two matching ones. And fit a dimmer.
