The Taper Alabaster Wall Sconce holds a tall, tapering column of natural alabaster in a ribbed vintage brass cup, so the fixture reads like a lit taper candle set against the wall. The bulb sits low inside the stone, which means the glow is strongest where the stone meets the brass and softens as it rises, the same way a flame fades upward.

Every column is cut from quarried alabaster, so the grey and amber veining differs on each piece and shows most clearly once the light is on. The brass cup is turned in stepped rings that catch a highlight on every edge, finished with a small sphere and a stepped round backplate that keeps the profile slim on the wall.

It takes a single E12 candelabra bulb, sold separately. Choose warm white 2700K or 3000K; anything cooler turns alabaster grey and flattens the veining. It runs on 110V–220V. Hung in pairs, it frames a bed, a mirror or a fireplace; on its own, it lights a hotel-style hallway or a foyer entryway without taking floor or table space. It suits Hollywood Regency, Modern Regency and transitional interiors.

Every Column Is Its Own Piece

Each taper is turned from a single length of quarried alabaster, so the veining, the tone and the way the glow climbs the stone will not match these photographs — and in a pair, the two columns will not match each other. That is the material, not a flaw.

Ordering a Pair

Tapers read best in twos — either side of a bed, a mirror or a mantel. Set the quantity to 2 and note “pair” at checkout, and both columns are turned from stone selected at the same time, so the tone stays in one family. Order the second months later and the two will not agree.

The bulb sits inside the stone, so an LED of around 4–6W gives the same glow as a 40W incandescent with far less heat.

Caring for alabaster and brass: dust the column and the cup with a dry, soft cloth. Alabaster is porous and the brass is finished, so never spray cleaner directly onto the fixture — water marks the stone permanently. Switch off at the wall and let the bulb cool before cleaning.

Where to hang it Beside a bed, either side of a mirror or a fireplace, along a hotel-style hallway, or by a front door. Leave at least 10″ of clear wall either side so the column reads as an object.
Beside a bed A pair works best, set so the base of the stone sits just above head height when you are sitting up. Centres 36–42″ apart over a queen or king bed.

If You Are Hanging a Pair
Both boxes, one height On a tall slim column, half an inch of difference between two sconces shows from across the room. Set both junction boxes to the same mark.
Spacing a pair Leave 6–10″ between each sconce and the frame or mantel edge. Over a bed, centres 36–42″ apart.

The Design

The Candle Stays. The Wax Goes.

For most of their history, wall sconces held candles. A brass cup, a taper standing in it, a plate on the wall behind — the shape was decided by what a flame needed, and it stayed long after the flame was gone.

The Taper keeps that shape and changes the material. The candle becomes a column of alabaster, and the light moves inside it. Because the bulb sits low in the stone, the glow is brightest just above the cup and fades as it climbs — which is exactly how a real flame lights the wax beneath it.

The cup is turned in stepped rings rather than left plain, a nod to the drip cups on old candlesticks, and finished with a small sphere where the fixture meets the wall.

Selecting Your Stone

We Can Steer the Stone. We Cannot Copy It.

Each column is turned from one length of quarried alabaster. The seams in that length were set long before it reached the lathe, so the piece that arrives will differ from every photograph here.

One place the choice matters more on this shape: the bulb sits low inside the stone, so any heavy veining near the base reads darkest once it is lit. If you want a cleaner glow, ask for a clearer base.

The rest of the variation is the reason to use stone at all.

The Material

Stone, Not a Frosted Sleeve

Candle-style sconces are usually made with a glass, resin or acrylic tube. Here is what changes when the column is quarried alabaster.

The short version: a frosted sleeve can copy the outline of a candle. It cannot copy what light does inside a piece of stone.

Before You Order

The Box Sits Low. The Light Rises.

The backplate sits near the bottom of the fixture and most of the stone rises above it — so measure the junction box to where you want the base of the glow, not the top.

Dry Cloth, Base to Tip

✓ Switch off at the wall and let the bulb cool first.
✓ Dust the column with a dry, soft cloth, one pass from base to tip.
✓ Wipe the brass cup along the rings, not across them.
✓ Check the backplate screws once a year.

Don’t

✗ No water, glass cleaner, vinegar or alcohol on the stone.
✗ Never spray at the fixture — liquid runs down into the cup and the socket.
✗ No metal polish on the brass; it strips the vintage finish.
✗ Don't lever the column sideways in the cup to straighten it.
The column Dry dusting only. The stone absorbs liquid, so a water mark sits in the surface rather than wiping away.
The brass cup The rings trap dust in their steps. A soft brush along each ring does more than a cloth.
Changing the bulb Power off and let it cool. Support the stone with one hand while you reach the E12 bulb, and replace it with a warm white 2700K or 3000K LED, 40W or under.
Bathrooms Dry locations only — fine beside a vanity in a ventilated room, not where it takes direct steam.

If something happens to the stone: a chip or a fresh mark on alabaster is often improvable, but the fix depends on where it is. Send us a photo before you try anything.
